apple auditorium 2.jpg

I'm in the Bay Area for what has all the makings of a Major Apple Announcement. Mysterious email invitation to event in San Francisco? Check. Cryptic conversation with Apple PR about what to expect? Check. Confirmation from Apple that this event will be the announcement of its new tablet? No, but I didn't hop on a 6-hour flight to see some new laptops and a GarageBand update (as nice as those might be).

Not to contribute to the overflowing cauldron of speculation and hype, but this is the product announcement of the year. And since Apple invited me, your PCMag Audio & Video Analyst, we can assume that it's not simply a bigger iPhone nor a straight-up computer--but it will likely have a blend of 3G and Wi-Fi coverage. The iPad, iSlate--whatever Apple names it--is probably going to be a big iPod touch, but built with one untapped market in mind: e-readers.

Will the new Apple tablet reduce the Kindle to kindling? According to a recent New York Times article, major print publishers including Conde Nast and Hearst have developed tablet-ready versions of their magazines (as if they have known details about the tablet all along...) Oh, incidentally, there were some people on my flight who work for Hearst and Conde Nast magazines but do not traditionally attend tech events.

But what new features, aside from a (rumored) 10-inch screen built for e-books and e-zines, might it have? Subscription services to TV networks has been speculated, but I'm thinking that the execs who fired Conan aren't ready to embrace anything that might save them. Wireless audio? Kleer's excellent wireless audio transmission, which sounds much better than Bluetooth, could probably fit in a tablet. And of course, a larger screen opens up a new world of possibilities for app and game developers. Also, rumors that the iPhone will be available via more carriers abound. Stay tuned, folks. The live blogging begins at 10 A.M. Pacific Time, 1 P.M. Eastern.

Those prices are great. This will do things the phone and iTouch can't, while the iTouch and iPhone are more portable, with all the restrictions that imposes. This is another device for "bigger" things. That's why the price falls between iMac and iTouch.

Really great accessories as well. There's a dock! Why is that so interesting? When you're in lock screen, it puts you in the slideshow, so you have a great picture frame. Another dock WITH A KEYBOARD. Just slide your iPad into it. Charge your iPad and if you need to do a lot of typing, this is the way to go. Third accessory is a really nice case, doubles as a stand for typing, or watching video.

Sigh. I don't want just another e-book reader. I want the future! C'mon Apple, it's 2010 - don't let us down. Before you know it, we're going to be zipping around in hovercars and vacationing on the moon, so we need a fully functional, high memory, new OS tablet computer to pave the way. And if it could also be a decent e-book reader, that would be okay too.

There's a reason Apple stays behind in the general market on technology... they keep a very close eye on how it is used, what to expect, where it can go, etc. and then (and only then) decide if they can do it better. That's when they release a benchmark product that sets the standard all over the world. You can definitely be sure that a LOT of thought, research, and effort has gone into whatever they release! :)

i shall confess that i am excited about this new product. However am not looking forward to pay more than 700 dollars plus monthly service fee for a product that most likely will not replace all the devices that i now carry. i think it will fail just because there is not a real reason to own one.

So, let's hope Apple finishes the buzz and really comes up with a modern, smart, useful and cool new device, and not just another upgrade or new model.

Jenny,

Vacationing on the moon would be great, but Obama is about the kill manned space exploration, so unless you are prepared to move to maybe China you can forget about the moon (and all the great high-tech industries that would have helped save our economy too!) Nice going Mr. President...

This is another toy for the technocrats who demand to have their fingers on the latest technology and will pay the price for the entertainment it brings. The ipad will succeed, but not right away because there are too many people who don't have enough money to buy it if it costs more than $500.00 and many people are stuck in contracts with other devices and can't break the contracts or they need the devices they have because they contain too much information they need and use every day, and some use it almost every minute of every day because they have become addicted to it and they will forever be called technocrackheads. I want this word made part of the English language and it will become part when it is used more often. Keep on cracking you technocrackheads so you will eventually rule. TECHNOCRACKHEADS RULE.

Well, everyone knew Apple was jumping in and now we know. Despite what the naysayers have been shouting, I don't think the Apple Tablet will spell doom for the ebook readers. I spent about 90 minutes yesterday in a Barnes & Noble watching a demo of the Nook. I came away, quite impressed. I think I prefer it over the Kindle and the Sony digital ereader. I really liked the ability to change font size. It is unfortunate Amazon made the Kindle format proprietary. The Nook accepts many formats but not the Kindle. If B&N does follow what rumors are saying and comes out with 'Droid aps on the Nook, then I believe it will bypass the Kindle. Apple would fit in if they come out with a color ebook reader with touch screen utilizing eink and bringing it under $500. IMHO---Never happen.

I don't know who Steve is but he's dead wrong. Who wants a 10" phone? Phones gotta slip in your pocket and there's no way this will. What it is is a colour Kindle - so magazines will look great on it and so will newspapers. A decent gaming platform. A video display. Now, if we could only use it to draw.

I will almost certainly buy one and I bet a lot of other people will too. And I'll keep my phone in my pocket.
