If anything were to happen to my brand new Motorola Droid, I'm not sure what I would do—and I don't want to find out. So I picked up an Invisible Shield screen protector from Best Buy; it's one of the few protection options for the Droid currently on the market.

The product is a scratch-proof film that was originally implemented by the military to "protect high-speed helicopter blades from dust, dirt and debris."  You can read more about it and watch someone take a key to an iPhone screen that's protected by the film, on the Invisible Shield Web site. And I've outlined the application process with a Blackberry Pearl.

To get a feel for what the Invisible Shield looks like on the Droid, I've take a photos of mine next to a Shield-less Droid (above: left is without the Shield, right is with). When the screen's off, you can clearly see the film, but once the screen's on, the screen's images blast through the film without losing much clarity. I like it a lot and am glad for the protection; the other Droid's owner isn't crazy about the look. I'll let the pictures tell the story. Take a look after the jump.

In shots with two Droids, the Droid with the Invisible Shield is always on the right. Directly below is the Droid with the Shield.

I used to have an invisible shield on my Samsung Omnia.
The only reason I'm glad I bought it is that it enabled me to resell it for quite a nice price thanks to its as new condition.
Other than that, aesthetically, it is great at first, but after a few weeks, if you didn't actually manage to stick it PERFECTLY, dust comes and sticks on the borders/angles (if you go for the full cover), making the phone look pretty dirty.
But then again, I might just have been really bad at putting the shield on (but I'm not the only one... seen many reviews seconding this).
I now own a Hero and so far I'm quite happy with the standard screen protection...

I'm really glad you posted this - I've been thinking about some kind of protection for my shiny new Droid since I can't find a decent case or protector for it yet. In the meantime, I've just been carrying it in my pocket hoping I don't drop it or anything, but this will at least keep the screen safe!

I have one the invisible shield on my LG VENUS and will be getting it for my next phone, hopefully the droid, maybe the eris, when I am up for my new in two on my contract.

The process is easy if youtake your time and use the squeegee nice and slow. Also, their lifetime guarantee thing actually works. I managed to scuff my screen pretty pad and the shield took all of the damage. I emailed them and they sent a replacement, no charge.

Does the shield effect the sensitivity of the screen. with a shiled is it different pressing and using the touch screen is it harder or the same with or without a shield?

I think this thing needs to be installed in a clean room - the type of room where they assemble satellites.

I say this because I accidentally brushed a tiny part of the sticky side of the shield against my shirt and now it has dust on it that is impossible to remove. I also got fingerprints on it that I can not remove.

Between the dust & Fingerprints on the underside of the shield and the now mishapen (too vigourous in trying to get the bubbles out, I guess ) part that goes over the speaker, It looks awful on my DROID.

Also, What's whith delivering the black cloth soaking wet? I could not use that wet black cloth to get the dust off of the DROID because all it did was put water marks on it.

I tossed this thing in the trash and am done fiddling with it.

This screen protector is not needed anyway.
AFTER I ordered the Invisible Shield, someone posted a YouTube video where they tried to scratch the DROID's touch screen with a set of car keys and even dropped them on it. NOT a single mark!

Save your money and aggravation

I am currently using the invisibleshield fro the droid and while it does protect the screen quite well, it affects the slickness that the droids screen has and definitely has affected the sensitivity of the screen to the point that it does not respond if I touch it from a certain angle. Also I was %100 sure that there was no dust on the screen when
I applied the shield yet there is dust that you can see under the shield...it must be microscopic or something. There is also a prism affect that you can see when the background of whatever is on the screen is white (basically when the screen is displaying white you see lots of mini little rainbows as if there was water spread across the screen). The only reason I'm keeping it on is because I don't know how well the droid resists scratches. If someone will prove to me that it's more or less scratch resistant, I'll ditch the invisible shield right away.

To the poster who said a screen protector is not needed and that the Droid phone resists scratches, that is complete bunk! I have had my Droid for about a month now and I already have minor scratches on the screen! You cannot see them unless you turn the screen off and hold it in the light, but they ARE there and believe me, I've tried to be very careful with mine!

I totally agree that the droid needs protection. My droid - just 2 months old - had several scratches (the black paint seems most suseptible). Unfortunately even 1 scratch is considered "physical damage" and Verizon does not want to cover it. That is a VERY expensive problem to have.

I ordered my InvisableShield yesterday.

The Invisishield is really a great product! I have had it on my LG Voyager for 2 yrs. I have replaced it twice but the shield comes with a LIFETIME WARRANTY, No matter what you do to it, even if you install it like crap and don't like the look just take it to the store you bought it or send it in to ZAGG and they will send you a new one. I have it on my 60 GB Ipod and will be getting it on my Droid. My trick is let the people at the store install it, that way if it looks like crap from them installing it they will take it off at the store and put a new one on! (make sure you keep the receipt) If you don't have it they will charge you an install fee again (it's only like 6 bucks though)! But really if you hate the cheap easily scratched screen protectors this one is def for you. It will never be scratched!!!! If you get a little dust under the edges or something dents the vinyl who care because it has a LIFETIME WARRANTY and you can just take it down to the store and get a new one for free! (they will make you pay the install fee though if you don't have you receipt, but again it's only like 6 bucks!)I tell everyone I know that this is the best buy they can get for screen protection because my shield on my Ipod has been on for 4 yrs now and if I were to pull it off right now you would honestly think i had just went and bought a Brand New Ipod. GREAT product worth the money and i stand by it 100%.. If you don't believe anything that I just said just go ask the ppl at Best Buy or the Invisishield store!
