droid update.jpg

Yesterday we wrote that Motorola's officially bringing the Droid to Europe, where it will be called the Milestone--and that Europe's version of the phone will support "Pinch and Zoom" multi-touch, while the U.S. Droid for Verizon will not. We asked Motorola about this, and here's the company's answer:

In response to your question regarding differences between MILESTONE and DROID, we work very closely with our carriers and partners to deliver differentiated consumer experiences on our mobile devices. At times, similar devices come to market with different features, depending on the region, carrier preferences and consumer needs.

You leave unanswered the most important question, can I buy the milestone in Europe, bring it here and take it in and activate it on my Verizon account, thus getting pinch and zoom? I presume that the phone, activated here, will work both here and in Europe since Verizon is now advertising that you can use their phones in Europe (which we all know is only a half truth).

Wow. The answer thats a non-answer.

Essentially that boils down to: "Sorry, sh*t happens."

Or if you want to read between the lines, it looks like there's a little jab at Verizon there: "we work closely with our carriers and our partners?"

What I don't get is, since the browser is open source, does not that mean that any variants (i.e. the pinch and zoom version) have to be open source as well? And if that is the case, can't we just download that version ourselves?

Never mind, scratch my last comment; the Apache v2 license is NOT viral. That being said, will just be a matter of time until a developer adds this feature to the main trunk.

Shouldn't it be a simple matter of loading the European software on a US phone?

BTW, Verizon is CDMA, Europe is on GSM. You should be able to get a European handset to work on AT&T though.

US Verizon Droids run Dolphin Browser. Dolphin Browser does Pinch and Zoom Multi Touch.
