Windows 7 has been out for a couple of weeks now, and it's both received largely glowing reviews and sold up a storm
compared to its predecessor, Vista. But we've been hearing some
rumblings about the 64-bit version of the OS not being compatible with
some devices. PCMag.com's editor-in-chief, Lance Ulanoff, reported that
it didn't recognize a Sony DCR-TRV140 camcorder he tried to plug in.
It's been common knowledge for a while now that 64-bit versions of Windows require digitally signed drivers, so mismatches aren't unheard of, but given the traction 64-bit gained during the Vista years, it's kind of surprising.
We'd
like to find out the scope of this, and you can help us out. If you've
had trouble getting any of your hardware to work with 64-bit Windows 7,
leave a comment on this post and tell us what sort of device you tried
to connect and what happened when it didn't work.

My 64bit Win7 build only needed to recognize tv tuner and blue tooth dongle locally, which it has done since the public beta. However, I have two printers attached to a 32bit XP box that were recognized and shared with no problem by the Release Candidate, but were hard to connect using Win7 Home Premium.
I found an INF file for the Brother 2140 laser on the 32bit box, copied to 64bit Win7 box, and all went swimmingly...but could not pull off same trick for HP 930C. HP offers no 64bit drivers on its support site, sending you to Windows Update. I could not find any stand alone driver downloads there, so I plugged HP directly into 64bit box, it was recognized, went to Windows Update where an updated driver was retrieved and installed...and it also updated Brother 64bit driver. Plugged HP back into 32bit box, and no longer had any issues connecting to either Brother 2140 (as default printer) or HP 930C (as additional printer)across home network that consists of XP Pro, XP Media Center, Vista Home Premium and Win7 Home Premium machines.

I put W7 32-bit on my laptop and 64-bit on my desktop. No problems whatsoever on either for devices, drivers, or printers.

Win 7 Ultimate 64bit recognized and loaded a driver for a Studio/Pinnacle video capture PCI card I have. It appeared to work ok but then Studio 11 started crashing whenever I started to transfer video from my video camera through the capture card. Rebooting and restarting would allow the capture to continue and complete, but trying to then start a new capture session would result in the same crash/hang of the software and the OS.
The benefits of the OS far outweigh this one failing, and I don't do enough video capturing for it to be a real nuisance, but I would like it fixed.
Since my background is IT consulting, I've tried everything I can to work around the issue, but the card is old and I imagine newer hardware will fair better.

One of the worst offenders is efax.com ... they don't support 64 bit. Geee guys wakeup and smell the coffee before all your customers jump ship. Talk about asleep at the wheel.

I have a 4 month old HP desktop running Vista Home Premium 64bit and I did a clean install with my Windows 7 upgrade dvd to 7 Home Premium 64bit. I have 3 external hard drives that I use and they worked fine with Vista. Now I can't copy or transfer any files to any of these hard drives, it works for about 30 seconds and then it stops and it says something like unable to find destination. Also my mouse and keyboard use usb and they freeze up and stop working. They are connected thru usb ports on my HP monitor. I have a Seagate,HP and Maxtor hard drives. I can read everything on these drives like videos, pictures and other docs. I went to the device manager and tried to update drivers but it said they are already updated. So right now I can't backup any of my data. Can someone help with a solution for this. Thanks

I'm running 64 bit Windows 7 on my 3GB late 2006 Macbook, using the Snow Leopard Boot Camp drivers.
Most of my hardware could be considered legacy, e.g., a 2001 HP G55 AIO, that installed OK on a Jetdirect 170 print server.
The only device I have that can not be installed (it didn't work in Vista, either) is a Vivicam 3350B that I bought on Woot.com for $7.50. I use the camera as a webcam in XP Mode and it works.

I have a problem with my Logitech Mouse (MX Revolution). It is a USB/wireless device (has a USB dongle and the mouse itself is wireless). Windows 7 sees it and I am able to install the "Windows 7" 64-bit drivers (even though it's actually the Vista driver, but Logitech's site is now claiming it's a Windows 7 driver also - whatever I guess). It has problems loading on startup/login and I have to manually re-run the Mouse setup / config app and then click OK or close it out to fix it. The actual mouse pointer etc works fine. Every so often the software gets corrupted and i have to uninstall, reboot and re-install. Problem did not happen on Vista 64 Ultimate. The Win7 64-bit is also Ultimate and is a fresh install with all updates from Windows Update installed. It's been a real PITA. Logitech's drivers have been unimpressive to me lately with Win7 though. I hope they improve with time.

I have a logitech E3500 webcam I downloaded drivers off of the logitech website for Window7 and there are times when the webcam no longer responds or acts like its unplugged.

Deliah that Logitech bug affects all major browsers (Chrome, IE, Firefox, Safari, SeaMonkey, Opera etc.) but Logitech still refuses to admit there is a problem.

Avaya IP SoftPhone also fails to install and run properly in Windows 7 64-bit. They have missed the boat on 64-bit support and UAC support.

Byron Dailey > You are maxing out the power on your USB ports. When your mouse and keyboard (which I guess is USB) is failing, then it means there's a problem with your USB power - try putting some of your harddrives on different usb that is not running through your screen.

I was surprised to find that efax messenger does not have a 64 bit version out and efax does not seem to care. Since I use this for work related information I am screwed.

Drivers are not Windows 7's only problem. You can not make changes to anything, because they have made it simple.Simple that you are at their mercy.Click a button or check a box to let Windows manage you back-up. The drive shows 19 Gig with 6.2 used, but the the error says the the drive is ,too small for Your back-up. This is the original error. We are back to Check a box to let Windows manage you Drive Merry go around.A few of my devices an software reinstalled with the Use an old version of Windows to install a program. my USB mouse an Keyboard freeze when Windows goes to sleep. If I unplug them and replug them they come backup an wake Windows 7. An if you decide you have had enough of the merry go round with Windows Action Center just Click the ghost Statement that says Don't bring this image up again. The pop up an flag goes away for awhile then comes back a day later.Simple right.I can figure the problems ,but now I have to figure where to go to make the Changes to make the changes to make the changes,Simple right.....!!!!!!

My HP 1010 Laserjet and HP G3010 scanjet do not have 64 bit drivers. I solved this issue by installing XP-Mode on my Windows 7 Ultimate installation.
The complete story is posted on my blog at

Okidata's C5500 is one of the best color laser printers in years, but it becomes a paper weight when connected to a 64 bit computer. Anything sent to the print spooler disappears into the ozone layer and never makes it to the printer.
Both Windows and Okidata claimed to have fixes ... tried 'em all (including Okidata's 64 bit driver) and none worked. Various bulletin boards had questionable fixes, and none worked.
I'm currently running it on a 32 bit computer, and it prints wonderfully. In the meantime, I've hooked up a Samsung laser printer to my two 64 bit computers, and it seems to work fine.

Regarding Logitech driver problems...I have had 'em since Win7 Beta, even trying Logitech's latest(and they issued at least 2 updates) since I bought Dinovo Mini(wireless, using bluetooth usb dongle)..worst problems with Release Candidate...freezeups, no recovery from sleep mode...either had to reboot machine or Dinovo(take out battery, reinstall). Finally decided to to dump Logitech software and use generic Win driver(s)...things going much better. Could not let Release Candidate sleep, but random freezes stopped...installed Win7 Home premium, and only ONE random freezeup since install 10/24, and discovered it freezes if I let screensaver engage(which I seldom do), but can get it unstuck if I remote connect(I use VNC) across the network. Seems about two steps forward and one back, but I recommend dumping logitech drivers where possible and using Win7 generics

I have a vista 32bit desktop w/USb to an HP printer (photosmart D7560),& also hard wired to a belkin N wireless router, a vista 32 bit wireless n laptop, & a new HP win7 64 bit wireless n laptop. I can access/move files from all 3 machines no problem. I can "see" the printer from the win 7 laptop and set it up OK, but can't print to it. (error code 0x0000007a) The other 2 machines can print without problems. I have spent about 15 hours w/HP support (3 people), and finally paid to get MS support (so far 5 hours & 1 escalation). No solution as yet!
November 7, 2009 8:23 PM
No fails. Best 64bit support for drivers so far from Microsoft. Most of the failures that I have heard about have been user error or bad device connections.

win 7 professional 64 bit wouldn't recognize my usb/20 in 1 memory card reader. Suddenly one reboot it did, lasted for about 5 days, now I'm back to a "unknown device"!!!

when I upgaded from vist to win 7,at first it wouldnt recognize the product key number.finally after 29 tries it allowed me to finish the upgrade, then two weeks later ask for the product key again!

Lyra Wireless 2.0 - Its a USB audio transmitter that was working in Vista Ultimate on un-signed drivers.
Now on Windows 7, I have to hit F8 and select "disable driver signing" while its booting, else all the USB ports are disabled.
Solution: XP-Mode! I installed iTunes (so I can use Remote on iPhone) and the drivers for Lyra Wireless 2.0 in XP-Mode and made it work.

It took me 6 mos to get vista 64 working to my satisfaction,
So I did a mirror image to my ext hard dr. Then I did a clean install of W7 Ultimate, it recognized my logitech mx 5500 revolution and mouse (both wireless) then I downloaded logitech's latest Set driver/software program and it worked perfectly. (I have an hp desktop quad core w/4gb mem)
The only problem I had w/W7 was internet/home net work (2 PC's and an Imac), I tried everything I and friends new and nothing worked (Att DSL Modem and linksys router), After 5 days I was working in my word processor and noticed in my task bar that the network/internet access was working!!!!
Both internet and home network have worked perfect since (6 Mos) If anyone can figure this one out let me know.
Thanks for lending me your earPost

I did the Vista to Windows 7 upgrade via the Sony Vaio upogarde disk. I have a Xerox 6180 Phaser printer. Problem is I cannot print 32 bit applications. I can print webpages from the 64 bit IE, but not from the 32 bit IE. The thing is this worked in Vista 64 bit. I deinstalled the drivers and tried to download the new Windows 7 driver from the Xerox website, and using the "have disk" method Windows 7 says that folder is not a 64 bit driver. I'm forced to let WIndoiws install the driver for me, and it won't print 32 bit apps. Any thoughts appreciated.
November 8, 2009 12:38 PM
I like Windows 7 64 bit but it needed a lot of tweaks and add-ons to work to my satisfaction. No back button for my mouse, x-mouse button control fixed that. No 64 bit Flash Player, go figure. I went to Nvidia for latest video driver, K-Lite Codec, MPC-64 and now playing great looking HD videos on 32" monitor (component from video card).
Main 64 bit apps: Photoshop CS4, Lightroom2, WinRAR, AVAST. It runs 32 bit apps as well as WinXP-SP3 with latest updates.

Windows 7 could not find drivers for my Epson Perfection 1640U photo scanner.Epson doesn't have the drivers either.
November 8, 2009 2:49 PM
I put W7 64-bit on my laptop and 64-bit on my desktop. No problems whatsoever on either for devices, drivers, or printers.
November 8, 2009 4:03 PM
So far the only device that has failed to work as it did with Vista 64 bit, is an HP Officejet J6480 All-in-One Printer. With Vista 64 bit it worked wireless on the network. Since Windows 7 it only works with a USB cable. HP recommends this until a fix is available.

I have a HP a6838f desktop five months old. It freezes on int.expl a lot, also I can not run my Dell 944 printer. I wish now I did't upgrade to windows 7.

My Canon Scanner N650u worked with Vista 64 but not Win 7 64. No drivers are available at Canon or Win Update. Good scanner, hate to have to buy a new one.
November 9, 2009 1:25 PM
Yea, my nice MICROSOFT Keyboard with fingerprint reader doesn't support 64bit. Come on, Microsoft? Can't even support your own products? Of course they don't sell them any more, after making the big deal that Windows 7 had biometrics built in to the OS.
November 9, 2009 1:33 PM
I have an HP OfficeJet Pro L7590 printer that I purchased a few months ago. It is typical of HP not to produce the software to support new operating systems to force the consumer to buy new products. But this is a fairly new printer and HP had months to produce the updated sotware, and to to this day they have only produced the basic printer driver. This is a multifunction printer, and the scanner and copier don't function with Windows 7. Shame on HP.
November 9, 2009 1:40 PM
Brother MFC multi function will print but no longer fax from destop, nor scan from destop....had to uninstall Nero prior to install, could not upgrade as Nero uninstll corrupted all drivers for DVD drives, had to download software for update, still no drives so i had to do full clean install causeing me no end to headaches.... now my drives work...I will never put Nero on anything i own...7 days later still waiting on a solution from Nero on how to fix the second computer with the same problem

Stefan : Only my mouse and keyboard are connected to the usb ports on my monitor. 2 of my external drives are directly connect to the desktop via usb cable. I also have a HP drive that slides into the Personal Media drive bay on my HP desktop. As of today I still can't copy anything to these drives.
November 9, 2009 2:43 PM
I have an esata external harddrive PRODRIVE 1TB that keeps dropping out of ready, for example, during a backup. It is attached to a laptop HP DV4-1280US.
Worked fine under Vista 64 home premium. I am now on W7 home premium.
Fortunately it has a USB port also and it seems to work fine with a USB connector. However, I have a performance penalty vs. esata.
Yes, I updated to the latest W7 chip et al drivers for my HP machine.
November 9, 2009 2:58 PM
My USB wireless adapter (Level 1 614) and then iPhone wouldn't connect. Turns out to be a P55 motherboard/Win 7 64 issue that is fixed in the BIOS. USB power was the issue. Changed C State settings in BIOS and now everything works.
November 9, 2009 4:05 PM
On a new HP tx2z with Windows 7 Home Premium preinstalled:
Could not add iPhone as a Bluetooth Peripheral Device: no driver. Could not start Wireless iAP service.
Successfully installed software for iPhone as a Bluetooth AV Source, Bluetooth SYNC, and Bluetooth AV Remote Control Target, but unable to connect device to computer.
Apple doesn't have any drivers, help or comment.

Here's a real good one for you. My 5 year old Dell workstation computer is "not windows 7 compatible" according to DEll. This means that when you try to install windows 7, it will not recognize your hard drive at all. Asks you to install drivers for it, but Dell does not have and probably never develop drivers for this operating system. Have to run windows xp on it for the rest of the computers life.
November 9, 2009 4:30 PM
On Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, there are no drivers available for my Adaptec 1220SA Raid controller or more suprisingly for my HP LaserJet 2300dn printer. Anyone with a suggestion would be most welcome.
November 9, 2009 5:17 PM
Had problems with Vista 64-bit, running ATIs Ctalyst for one of their cards, and problems running a Logitech G7 Mouse. But Win 7 has no problems, everything working 100% to my satisfaction. Though the mouse replaced with a Roccat one, which is superb.
Have WD,Maxtor, and Samsung F1, internal HDs, a good mix of external USB2 HDs, all OK.
My only item that needed adjustment was the Firewall permissions had to be edited, nothing else to add.
I'm very happy with Win7, seems MS have got it right at last.
November 9, 2009 5:41 PM
HP has not updated the drivers for its laser printer 1505 or something. I had to download and run all the driver installation programs in compatability mode.
November 9, 2009 5:54 PM
Quicken will not print with 64-bit Windows 7 and HP printers. I'm not sure if Quicken will print with other brands of printers. Quicken and HP know about it. HP provides a workaround but it doesn't work for me. They want you to install a deskjet printer even though you don't have the printer (I use a multifunction wireless printer which works fine with other programs.)
So, my workaround is that I now print my Quicken invoices to PDFs and then print the PDF's. Thank goodness I don't use Quicken check printing.
November 9, 2009 6:52 PM
An attmpt to install my HP officejet printer under W7 64 bit failed even though Windows update found the generic Microsoft driver that was supposed to work. Apparently parts of the environment are missing and won't let the install happen without them.
November 9, 2009 10:39 PM
I don't know about Windows 7 - 64 bit, I have a real problem with Vista 64 bit. Because of an issue with audio drivers of some type, using an HDMI cable with my monitor was a no-go. Every time the monitor went into sleep mode and then woke up, the system would reboot. The fix per Microsoft tech notes? Forget the HDMI cable and use the standard VGA cable - end of problem.
November 9, 2009 11:56 PM
Shockingly, I haven't been able to really stump Win7-64 yet. It even recognized esoteric peripherals like X10s video capture dongle and home control unit since the beta. Each time (Beta, then RTM trial, then final release) I left them plugged in during a clean install and somehow, each time it found drivers. I am still shocked. My LJ1100, OJ7680 printers both work with native drivers. The only problem is Abobe Premier elements 3.0 wont run. That's it. Everything else I've plugged in (WD MY Book, Seagate Freeagent, Duo Pro external RAID, prolific based external dock [USB hub/parallel port/serial port/ ps/2 ports]), all have worked flawlessly - can't say the same for Vista. I've been at this since the 80s and have never had a smoother, more trouble free OS transition.
One other minor hiccup is quick resume/ Viiv is not supported and must be disabled in BIOS.

I was able to have my D-Link DWL-G122 ver B USB wireless stick to work in vista 64 per method posted by Androidi at http://channel9.msdn.com/forums/TechOff/404490-how-to-Get-D-Link-DWL-G122-B1-USB-wireless-work-in-Vista-64-bit/
but it did not work when I upgraded to win 7. I could not install the RALINK driver anymore.

I am having trouble with 2 older Nvidia GEForce video cards that are running on my Xeon quad core system. Nvidia has stopped updating the drivers after XP 64.

I have an HP HDX9000 series computer with Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Running the Windows 7 upgrade advisor registered the audio system, the HDTV receiver, the Quick Launch buttons and a long list of older Microsoft software as incompatible. I am also disappointed at HP for not providing more customer support by providing a companion upgrade resource for machines older than 6 months. I have the skills to get through this but for the first time since my original pc - a Leading Edge Model D - I am beginning to think Microsoft just doesn't care about customer loyalty and that Apple has the right idea. Never thought I would reach this state.

I had Vista 64-bit on my HP Slimline PC. My Linksys WAG160N modem/router refused to work with it, although the box it came in said it would. I wrote to Linksys in Holland, and they say they haven't made a patch for this and weren't planning to. I've now downgraded to 32-bit and all problems have disappeared.
November 12, 2009 1:36 PM
i have tried every wireless adapter i have [ativa, belkin, linksys, foxconn] and none has drivers for windows 7 64 bit. i found vista drivers will work on 32 bit on linksys but thats all. i called several manufactures that said thier vista drivers would but they wont. if anyone has a source post it. i have a small shop with 5 to 6 pcs on line all the time and would like to run windows 7 on all.

I built a computer for windows 7. Gigabyte GA-EP45T Extreme MB, ATI 3870 1GB Graphics card, 2 500 GB seagate drives, a 1000 watt power supply..You guys think you have it tough..My problem is sitting in front of me, my X2GEN 19" monitor..I've tried to install win 7 6 times before I figured out I need a firmware up date for my monitor..When win 7 starts expanding files and goes threw a few restarts my screen goes black and stays that way..I can't seem to find an update..I guess I'll buy a new one..
November 16, 2009 11:32 PM
Several web sites have posts about the incompatibility of Canon HV20 camcorders in high definition mode with both Windows Vista and Windows 7 (Beta) versions. This probably still applies to the released version of Win 7. I have a long string of contacts with Pinnacle (movie software), Canon and Microsoft on this. Microsoft last elevated it to their "Escalation" team. Also, my old Epson R300 printer (cheaper ink) is still cranking along and is incompatible with Win 7. Hence, I choose not to upgrade to Win 7 yet.

I have a Panasonic KX-P1121 printer(the old ribbon printer), last time in vista, they use to have the driver pre-installed, but when i tried to do it in Windows 7 this time, i have problem finding "panasonic" under the printer list. OMG!
