Want to turn your Motorola Droid into an in-car navigation device? Google's navigation software is free, but the car kit will run you $30. Ditto for transforming your Droid into a bedside alarm clock. Verizon Wireless said today that the two specialized magnetic docks for the new Droid phone will each cost $29.99.
The first dock, the Phone Holder for DROID, is the Droid's car mount. The car kit works with the Droid's car mode, a simplified interface for calling and navigation.
The second dock, the Multimedia Station for DROID, turns your phone into a bedside alarm clock that displays the weather. The Multimedia Station also puts the DROID at a good angle for watching music and video.
The two docks are expected to become available when the Droid goes on sale Nov. 6.

I'm assuming that you won't be able to take a call and follow directions if it's in GPS mode.

Of course you can! That's that power of multitasking. You didn't think this was some second rate phone that can't multitask did you?
DISCLAIMER: This is not a jab at the iPhone but rather any phone that can't multitask but also has GPS navigation abilities.

At least the multimedia station has some charging ability. the car dock is just a mount. I'll think i prefer a creative magnet mount of my own for free in the car.

I think Maria's comment is based at the fact that verizon don't do voice and data at the same time. With that being said, Is it Nov 6th yet? I want my droid!

Maria, that is a good question.
I know that the Google Navigation program downloads the maps for the current journey. I also know that Verizon's CDMA network can put downloads on hold when receiving a call. So I think that the Droid should, technically, be very capable of taking a call while driving. You'd run into trouble if you try to change your route while on the phone. Then the CDMA network would not let you download while talking.
