 Kyocera is mostly known for lower-end phones nowadays, but the company is aiming to make powerful smartphones soon. At the CTIA Wireless trade show in San Diego, Kyocera execs said they will release an Android-based phone in 2010. By 2011, it'll be making CDMA/LTE phones supporting both 3G and 4G networks, and some of those will run Android, too.
While Kyocera sells phones from its Sanyo subsidiary to Sprint, Kyo's core market is the "tier 2" carriers - lower-cost guys such as Virgin Mobile, Cricket and MetroPCS. None of those carriers have really settled on a strong smartphone plan, although MetroPCS has one costly BlackBerry and Cricket execs told me yesterday that they haven't ruled out smartphones.
You can probably see where this is going: Does this mean we'll see low-cost, stylish Kyocera Android smartphones with all-you-can-eat plans on Cricket and MetroPCS? Here's hoping.
