amazon logo.JPGOn Thursday, Amazon announced that it will implement same-day shipping for certain select cities, giving last-minute shoppers a bit of an extra edge - provided they live close enough to the distribution center, of course.

The lucky cities are: New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Seattle and Washington D.C. Chicago, Indianapolis and Phoenix will also receive the service in the coming months, Amazon said.

Here's the way it works, according to Amazon:

  • New York City - Order as late as 10 a.m.
  • Philadelphia - Order as late as 10 a.m.
  • Boston - Order as late as 10:30 a.m.
  • Washington D.C. - Order as late as 10:30 a.m.
  • Baltimore - Order as late as 10:30 a.m.
  • Las Vegas - Order as late as 11 a.m.
  • Seattle - Order as late as 1 p.m.
How much will it cost? Well, if you're an Amazon.com Prime member, just $5.99. Amazon doesn't seem to have listed its prices for non-Amazon-Prime members, although one would expect that the prices will be higher than what Amazon lists for one-day shipping at the end of its pricing page: anywhere from $7.99 per shipment on up, at least for the one-day shipping option.

Amazon has also expanded Saturday delivery options, the company said. Now, items ordered before the cut-off time on Thursday using Amazon's two-day shipping will be delivered on Saturday instead of Monday. For Prime members, Thursday-to-Saturday delivery is free using Two-Day Shipping. For all other customers, the service is offered at the current Two-Day Shipping rates. Saturday Delivery is also available for orders placed before the cut-off on Fridays for $6.99 per item for Prime members and an additional charge for all other customers, Amazon said.

Amazon has also listed its holiday shipping schedule. For the 2009 holiday season, the following order deadlines apply for delivery by Dec. 24:

Order as late as Dec. 17, Amazon said, and users can be eligible for Free Super Saver Shipping. The standard shipping cutoff is Dec. 20, and the two-day shipping cutoff is 7 PM PST on Dec. 22. Customers can order as late as 3:30 PM PST on Dec. 23 to be eligible for one-day shipping, and the drop-dead deadline for those cities with same-day shipping is 1 PM PST on Dec. 24. After that, you'll have to ask Santa.

So if DC is covered and Baltimore is covered, I'm desperately hoping the area in between is covered. :D

What an awesome offering by Amazon! I know a number of businesses will probably leap at this right away (I know the company I work for has had need for items same-day, now Amazon can provide them) but personally, I wouldn't mind ordering things for myself like this too!
