Okay. This has gone on long enough.

I hate to play the unnamed sources game, but I have unnamed sources like everyone else does. I just don't usually bust them out, because I prefer to use named sources that you, the reader, know you can trust.

When the rumor popped up that Verizon is passing on the Palm Pre, my unnamed sources in the industry - call them People Who Know A Lot Of Stuff, or Sources With Knowledge Of The Situation - were pretty derisive. Verizon hasn't passed on the Pre, my sources said; it is just letting Sprint have their time in the sun. But my unnamed sources also wanted to stay off the record, so I didn't write about the topic. They have since changed their minds, so as to make all this idiocy stop.

Reliable analysts with actual names agree with my People Who Dare Not Speak Their Names. Deutsche Bank's Jonathan Goldberg says Verizon will probably carry the Pre, and he has an actual name. (It's Jonathan Goldberg.) Tavis McCourt, whose mother named him Tavis McCourt, agrees that Verizon will probably carry the Pre.

Here's another name: Maggie Reardon, who quoted Jonathan Goldberg and Tavis McCourt in her story.

None of those names add up to the big one, though. Back in May, Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam - the biggest name you can get for this story - said his carrier would stock the Palm Pre. Nothing about that has changed, according to my faceless, hooded cabal of elders. Now, Verizon may decide to cancel the Pre between now and their planned launch date early next year. But for now, it's on track.

Verizon and Palm had no comment on any of this.

I just want to say that I never bought into this story. I have a friend that works for Verizon Wireless and he *assured* me that the Pre is coming to Verizon in January or February of next year.

I think a lot of news sources jumped the gun on this and should release a formal retraction and maybe even an apology to people for misleading people so much.

I have to jump on the "glad to hear this" bandwagon - partially because the fact that Verizon is planning to pick up the Pre after the holidays is the only thing keeping my on my Verizon contract that ends in December. :D
