In NYC today, Monster announced its latest celebrity-endorsed earphones in front of a gaggle of photographers and a smattering of journalists crammed into a room at the New York Palace Hotel. The celebrity in question is one Lady Gaga, and her line of Monster earphones--consistent with Dr. Dre's "Beats"--is called "Heartbeats." Aw.

The earphones feature a triangular piece of glittery almost-jewelry that's fixed to the earpieces. What does the triangle stand for? I'll let Ms. Gaga explain: "In the deepest hour of the night, I confess to myself three things; I would die if I was forbidden to write, forbidden to love, or forbidden to fashion. heartbeats embody the trinity of my human being." Oh, okay.

When asked if these "female headphones" would ever come out in a male version, the lady replied: "For MY male fans, these are perfect".

I didn't leave the event with a review unit, so that basically ruins my plans of having a fashion show back here at the office. My main interest is actually to determine whether these are simply the in-ear version of Beats by Dre, with the Trinity of Lady Gaga's Human Being glued on to them. The good news is: We have equipment here to test them and find out, what, if anything other than the glitter, is different. The bad news is: We will have to wait until Monster wants to send me a pair.

Lady Gaga was flanked onstage at the press conference by Dr. Dre and producer Jimmy Iovine, both of whom seemed comfortable in their roles as pitchmen. Noel Lee, "Head Monster," was also present, of course, delivering a convincing PowerPoint from his Segway. The mini-sandwiches were delicious. I heard "Poker Face" roughly eight times.

Heartbeats by Lady Gaga will come with the option of in-line controls for the iPhone and iPods that are equipped with the VoiceOver feature. Available in mid-to-late October, the earphones will come in three flavors: basic (no ControlTalk for iPhones, with red earpieces) for $199.95; basic with ControlTalk (black-on-black design) $149.95; and a $179.95 version dubbed "Heartbeats by Lady Gaga Haute Couture Ultra High Definition Headphones," which features a crystal earpiece design, and which, despite the name, is a pair of earphones, not headphones.
