Remember Diebold? One of the companies that took some heat years ago for reported problems with their e-voting machines? Well, they've apparently had enough. Diebold is getting out of the e-voting business and selling that segment to Election Systems & Software, Inc. (ES&S) in a deal worth $5 million.
Diebold said it has known since early 2006 that its election systems business was "non-core to its operations." It has been in the e-voting business since January 2002 when it purchased Global Election Systems, Inc.
In 2004, researchers from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) published a report on e-voting that criticized the security of Diebold e-voting machines. At the time, Diebold machines were used in 37 states.

This is probably a good move - Diebold can get this "non-core" element of its business in the hands of someone whose business it is to manage this technology, and hopefully any political influence Diebold has will be removed as well.
Now to the task of whether ES&S will do something about the security of the voting machine technology...
