Samsung_Omnia_Verizon.jpgIf you're looking for a deal on a smartphone and are stuck signed up with Verizon, this may be your chance. According to Boy Genius Report, the carrier has cut most of its smartphone prices to $99 or under (with a two-year contract and after rebates, naturally).

There are some good ones in the bunch, such as the much-improved BlackBerry Storm, the Windows Mobile-based Samsung Omnia, and the powerful-if-inconsistent HTC Touch Pro. All three now cost just $99 with a two-year contract, which is several hundred dollars less than before in some cases. The only ones above $99 are the BlackBerry Tour and the Samsung Saga. (The HTC Ozone and BlackBerry Curve 8330 remain at $49 and are both great deals, incidentally.)

All this does is bring Verizon's pricing in line with the $99 iPhone 3G on AT&T--at least while we wait for the Storm 2 and other new handsets to reach Verizon stores. But we all win as a result, so who cares why Verizon did it?

The Omnia Smartphone is an Awesome telephone/Computer. I wholeheartedly recommend it. I have had mine 2 months and is powerful with a 5MG Camera/Video on board. Even an FM radio that can be recorded! Great Battery life. Laser Mouse, business card scanner, and WIFI included. Create and view Excel, Word, Powerpoint, copy and paste. Remote desktop and Movie editor and even a flashlight included. Go get one now. Excellent reception and sound. TV out to view on TV. Can't understand why this phone is not promoted over the iPhone. Same exact size. 8GB on board. Insert an additional 16GB mini-chip for 24GB of memory!

Wow - I don't know if this is Verizon trying to make the smartphone accessible to the people who really want one but don't want to spend a ton of money, or whether this means there's a bunch of new devices waiting in the wings that Verizon will release shortly at ridiculously high prices.

I mean, what Verizon giveth, Verizon usually taketh away. Still, really good deals to be had.

Yes they dropped the prices on their phones but did you check out what they did to their plan pricing? They are super expensive now. I've been waiting to purchase an Omnia 2 but when I saw the price drop I almost snagged an Omnia. During the check-out & plan selection process I realized what was up. They totally jacked up the plan pricing for data and stuff. I backed out on that one.

Felt like Disneyland. They hide the long lines for the rides inside buildings so that you don't get bummed out until you're trapped.

Weird, no pricing difference in the data/premium plans in the last year or so I've been with them. And my wife just got the Omnia last night (which I have as well) because of the drop in price. I am waiting for the Omnia II before I upgrade later this year.

Stuart,

What do you think of the Omnia? Does it work okay? Is it easy to type on? Does it sound okay?

I REALLY want an Omnia II but I can't find a release date for it anywhere and I'm not sure my current phone can hold out for much longer....
