The exterior of the Overland Cambridge bag says it all: "I'm ready for anything." Despite appearances, the Cambridge bag is not exactly for the woman about town. It's a tote, a briefcase, and a backpack all in one, but can this everything bag pull it off? Or is it too much to bear?
The inside provides ample room for a 13-inch laptop, small pockets to store your change or snacks, and tons of space to tote a plethora of books. Ballistic nylon protects the outside of the bag, making certain you'll be ready to protect yourself from that Starbucks coffee spill to the unexpected downpour on your way to class. This bag is nothing if not durable. Where most school bags fail is in the bottom of the bag, but the Cambridge Overland bag does not. You see, over time the books and pencils start to poke through the bottom of your average bag, wearing it away and eventually making the bag unusable. The Cambridge bag, on the other hand, is well reinforced at the bottom.
When I first laid eyes on this bag I assumed that I would be carrying it around as a tote, but I found the backpack option to be relatively more comfortable, especially when carrying heavy loads. (The straps are still a bit thin, but I preferred the backpack to the tote.) The tote option is convenient while running through the subway station when you need to grab your metro card in a hurry.
Overland's Cambridge bag is intended for the hiker with a day job. It's not the most fashionable bag, but it's able to blend in with the others at the office and sturdy enough to take outside. If it's a casual Friday, the backpack option is there, and if it's a more formal business occasion the tote option is there if you need it.
My biggest problem with the Cambridge bag is the carrying case for the laptop. Although insulated in fleece and polypropylene, it has too much wiggle room. When I hadn't crammed in my countless books, I could feel my 13-inch laptop hitting my back every so often when I walked. I would have preferred a little Velcro strap to keep my MacBook from bouncing around.
The bag weighs 2.05 pounds and is 15.5 by 13 by 6 inches. Its backpack straps can be stowed away to create a tote-bag look. Straps for the tote handles are adjustable as well. The main compartment can be zippered and clipped shut for double the protection. There are also compression straps on the sides that make the bag look a little too busy. The Overland Cambridge bag has a lot of things going on and at times it can make the bag look messy, but at the same time because of all the straps, it gives the wearer options. Are they the most stylish options? No, but options nonetheless.
