Nikon Coolpix S60If you're looking to save money, you don't always have to buy new. That's where refurbishment comes in. "Refurbished," according to Wikipedia, means "that the equipment was returned to the manufacturer either because the customer simply didn't want it or a minor problem was found. Before re-selling the equipment, manufacturers fix and certify the unit and sell it at a discount."

Typically, you'll receive just a 90-day manufacturer warranty when you buy a refurbished item, but you can always extend the life of your refurbished product by purchasing a 1- or 2-year warranty from SquareTrade.

There's nothing wrong with buying refurbished items. If it makes you feel any better, retailers like Apple, TigerDirect, and NewEgg all sell refurbished electronics at prices that are often too hard to pass up.

Wow! $49.99 for a refurbished Brother 2140 - AFTER rebate?? I purchased mine for $39.00 brand new. It would be better for most if you qualified the deals above by contrasting them with new item prices - which are often better and carry a longer warranty.

Well, that refurb red Dell notebook is pretty tempting, refurb or not - it's really shiny, and a pretty good chunk off the price of a comparable new one!

DavidS -- want to tell our readers where you were able to score the Brother laser printer for only $40 new? The lowest price I could find in new condition was $60 plus tax at Office Max: http://www.officemax.com/catalog/sku.jsp?skuId=21565940&cm_mmc=Pricegrabber-_-Technology-_-Printers-_-Laser_Printers&srccode=cii_5784816&cpncode=25-2633533-2. The rest of the retailers are selling it between $90 and $120.

The Pavilion has a bit of a rubbish price, I got a new(albeit slightly worse specced, 1.6Ghz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD but w/19" monitor) HP PC for £300. That, minus the price hike that comes from not living in the USA, probably equates to around $300. The Pavilion is not twice as good.

Maybe you should inquire who refurbished the item before deciding whether it's a good deal. If it was not refurbished by the manufacturer you're buying used merchandise with no way to know if it was really tested or whether the light came on so it passed the test.

Micro Center is always selling refurbished stuff. It's always changing. They recently had Wiimotes and nunchucks for about half price. They always have HP, Dell, and some other systems. Check out their website and search for "refurbished" and you'll find some great deals.
