Every time I go to Canada, I try to stop at Tim Horton's. They're an iconic Canadian donut-and-coffee chain, with a subtle je ne sais quoi (and a lot of maple-themed products.)
I was thrilled today to find out they're coming to New York City on Monday, replacing a dozen Dunkin Donuts franchises run by Riese Restaurants throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. Now, don't get me wrong: I still love Dunkin, especially now that they have an
iPhone app. But I'm looking forward to putting Tim's coffee up against my usual Dunkin cup in a morning taste test.
According to various interviews, CEO Dennis Riese picked Timmy's to replace Dunkin in part because they bake all of their donuts in each individual shop.
Why am I posting about donuts on a gadget blog? Come on. Geeks love donuts. It's Friday. It's a beautiful day. You want to hear about donuts.
The interesting thing about the Tim Hortons deployment is that they're going for total saturation of the Penn Station area. They're doing six locations around the city, and six right around Penn Station. So if you're looking for Timbits, Penn Station is the place to be, starting at 6 AM Monday morning.
Riese's 12 Tim's locations will be followed up in August by three more Tim's embedded in Cold Stone Creamery ice cream shops around Manhattan, which I'm less enthusiastic about.
Here are the 12 new Tim Horton's locations (after the jump):
- 22 Court Street, Brooklyn
- 451 Fulton Street, Brooklyn
- 1276 Lexington Avenue at 86th Street
- 2547 Broadway at 94th Street
- 761 5th Avenue at 50th Street
- 47 E 42nd Street at Madison Ave
... and six near Penn Station:
- 152 West 34th Street
- 401 7th Avenue at 32nd Street
- 1286 Broadway at 33rd Street
- 3 locations in Penn Station itself
Also, from 6 AM-9AM on Monday, July 13, everyone will get free coffee at the Tim's at the north end of the Penn Station LIRR concourse.

Glad to see the civilized cup of coffee is arriving in NYC. I'm sure it will take the city by storm.

Even more reason for me to move to NYC!
Maybe now I can convince my Canadian mother that NYC isn't that bad! ;)

The whole "dual operation" ice cream/donut shop thing doesn't work. That's why Dunkin has abandoned the idea. And that Cold Stone crap is hideous - gummy and icky, and with the "mix in" idea each time you order something, its different.
In this tough economic times, Americans are unlikely to support some Canadian operation, eh.

YAYYYYY!!! I have been waiting for this moment for soo long!!!! Finallyy Timmy's! I can't wait to have a good cup of coffee and an iced cap! Dunkin Donuts is so gross. Everything tastes like cardboard! I am so excited to be able to get a good cup of coffee in the city! One more check on my list to not move back to Buffalo... so that adds up to one check total. Ok Mighty Taco is next haha

There is a reason the most popular order at Tim Ho's is a double/double [two sugars + two creams]. It is because the coffee itself is not tasty enough to drink black. Second Cup is the better Canadian coffee chain. NYC coffee snobs should stick with their local cafes.

The initial NYTimes article about the Tim Horton's openings said that there would be a location downtown next to the NYSE. A mistake?
