In 1909, Peter Christian Richard (P.C.) opens a hardware store in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. His son Alfred J. Richard is born. At the age of six, A.J. starts to help his father around the store. Today you know that store as P.C. Richard & Son.
In the 1920s, the store begins to sell appliances. After expanding to many different locations across Queens, P.C. Richard & Son offered TV service in the 1960s. Today, the retailer has more than 50 locations in the New York City metro area, selling all sorts of electronics and appliances.
This week, P.C. Richard & Son is offering some hot deals on electronics, a few with free shipping offers. For today's TechSaver Test, I'm going to challenge the store's sales on the RCA Opal 2GB MP3/Video Player, the Garmin nuvi 205, the JVC Mini DV Camcorder GRDA30US, and the Olympus FE360 digital camera.
Dive in to this TechSaver Test, after the jump.
RCA Opal 2GB MP3/Video Player
(Regularly $39.97; Now $19.97)--Good Deal!
PCMag Editor Rating: 2.5/5 stars
The RCA Opal is a simple flash player that weighs 1.1 ounces and features a 1.5-inch LCD screen and a voice recorder. At only $20, can something so cheap be cheaply made? I hate to break it to you folks, but you get what you pay for here. It has a cheesy design, a substandard display, a so-so battery life, and convoluted user interface. So, if you're not expecting a whole lot from an MP3 player, $20 is a great price; just keep in mind that there are better players out there. I'm still labeling this as a good deal, because it's a good option for kids who may break the thing anyway.
Garmin nuvi 205
(Regularly $179.97; Now $129.97)--Bad Deal!
Free Shipping
This GPS device offers a 3.5-inch touch screen (not widescreen), preloaded maps, and voice-prompted routes. It comes with a car cord and vehicle dash/window mount. What it doesn't come with, however, is a good price. The two best prices I could find was at NewEgg for $110 (shipping not included) and at Buy.com for a price of $119 (shipping included).
JVC Mini DV Camcorder (GRDA30US)
(Regularly $199.97; Now $119.97)--Good Deal!
The GRDA30US (catchy model name, eh?) is a digital camcorder with a 2.4-inch screen, 30x optical zoom, and an image stabilizer. A quick search around the Web, and P.C. Richard & Son's $120 deal is a good one.
Olympus FE360 Silver 8.0 Megapixel Point & Shoot Digital Camera
(Regularly $139.97; Now $99.97)--Good Deal!
Free Shipping
If all you need is a simple point-and-shoot, this 8MP model may be your best bet. It has a 3x optical zoom, a 2.7-inch LCD screen, 48MB of built-in memory, and runs on a lithium ion battery. Good news: this is a good deal!
