Norton Internet Security 2009Fry's is an electronics retailer with 34 stores scattered around the United States. The store has certainly had its share of ups and downs throughout the years, from frustrated customers and questionable security tactics to Fry's vice president being charged with defrauding the company. Since then, Fry's has tried to maintain its place in the market by offering discounted items and weekly specials.

Through July 9, 2009, Fry's is offering a slew of discounts for the week, including specials on computers, software, and hard drives. What I found disappointing is that most of the retailer's specials are only available by picking up in-store; that leaves a lot of customers looking elsewhere for better deals. But even if you do have a Fry's near you, should you still bother? Find out if Fry's has good buys, after the jump.

Just so you know, Frys.com continually timed out while I was conducting my savings research.

Norton Internet Security 2009/Systemworks Basic 12/Ghost 14
(Regularly $70; Now $20)--So-So Deal!

You may think that you don't need a security suite to protect your computer from viruses and malware, but you'd be wrong, my friends. Norton's security products have consistently scored high marks with PCMag.com's Security Analyst Neil J. Rubenking. For effective spyware and virus protection for your computer, Norton Internet Security 2009 is what you'll want. (It scored 4.5 out of 5 stars.) Thanks to Frys.com, you can have this security suite (access for three users), plus Systemworks Basic 12 (which helps to fix computer problems and repair your hard drive) and Ghost 14 (which provides a full system backup) bundled with it, for $20 (with a $50 mail-in rebate). All you have to do is fill out the $50 mail-in rebate form, mail it to Symantec within 30 days of your purchase, and you'll receive a $50 Visa Prepaid Card. Not too shabby! For previous owners of any Norton or Symantec software product, you can upgrade to NIS 2009 for $50 when you send in the $20 mail-in rebate form; you'll get a $20 Visa Prepaid Card back. The only downside to this deal: You have to pick it up at your nearest Fry's store (no shipping offered). But wait: The site does mention there's free shipping. Doh! So, if you're not close to one of the 34 locations to get this super deal, where else can you find a similar one? Buy.com has NIS 2009 (three users) for $33.99 with free shipping (sales tax added for AZ, CA, GA, OH, TX, NV, WA, IL and IN). Even so, I'm listing this as a so-so deal since only a select bunch will be able to take advantage of it.

Lite-On SATA Internal 4X Blu-ray BD-ROM
(Regularly $99.99; Now $89.99)--Bad Deal!

This Blu-ray drive can read Blu-ray, DVD+/-R(W), and CD-R(W) media only; it does not burn media. Frys.com is slashing the price of the Lite-On Blu-ray drive by $10. Gee, could it spare just a little more? Unlike the Norton software, you can have the drive shipped to your home the same day you order it, but it will cost you around $7 for ground shipping. There's got to be a better price than this! Sure enough, NewEgg.com has the same drive for $69.99 with free shipping (sales tax added for CA, NJ, and TN).

Iomega eGo Desktop Hard Drive (1TB)
(Regularly $269.99 list; Now $94.99)--So-So Deal!
One-terabyte drives are a great investment for storing your entire media library, and now they're more affordable than ever. Iomega's 1TB eGo Desktop Hard Drive was rated 3.5 stars (out of 5) by PCMag.com Desktop Analyst Joel Santo Domingo. He found that the eGo Drive has a unique style, is simple to use, and fairly speedy. For $95, you can have this stylish drive, too! That's a great bargain, if you live by a Fry's store; shipping isn't offered for this item. But no worries: go to Amazon.com and pick up the "Ruby Red" model for $120.84; the "Jet Black" model for $114.95; or "Midnight Blue" drive for $115.98. I'm not sure why each color is priced differently (it's enough to make your head spin), but at least you can still get a decent deal. Again, Fry's is earning a so-so deal here because you can only buy it for the price in-store.

I always have and always will maintain that Fry's is one of the biggest ripoff's doing business. If they were in any other industry they would have been forced to close a long time ago!!

Well, judging by my findings, Fry's sale prices aren't that great.
