shane kimThe portable Xbox is coming: That much, it seems, is no longer up for debate. The question is when such a device will arrive. In an interview posted today by gaming site Kikizo, Shane Kim, a Microsoft corporate VP, confirmed perpetual rumors that the company's popular console will finally be getting a handheld counterpart.

"For us, it's a matter of focusing on 'when'," Kim told the site, "because if we chased after a mobile or handheld opportunity, we would not have the resources and ability to do things like instant-on 1080p HD, Facebook, Twitter, Project Natal ... And so we've chosen to focus on the living room experience from a hardware standpoint, if you will, but we're building a service in Live that will... extend to other platforms. No question about it."

Kim added that, for a portable system, Xbox Live would be the "connective tissue." Plenty of questions remain, the VP added, including whether such a device would also function as a phone (via Windows Mobile) a la the iPhone.

I would say I'm surprised, but there's just too much money in the mobile gaming marketplace for Microsoft to not move into it. They probably figure that with a strong enough device, they could do in the portable gaming space what they did with XBox to Nintendo in the console space.

This doesn't surprise me coming from Microsoft. Did you really think Bill Gates would let Sony and nintendo dominate the Portable Game market - I don't think so!! Once this comes out Sony and Nintendo will have to come out with something better to compete!!

"Did you really think Bill Gates would let Sony and nintendo dominate the Portable Game market"

because Kaiser Bill is completely and totally in control of Microsoft and every department of the company's business, right kids?

This is great news. Microsoft as always will deliver. Granted they suck at some things and as long as they don't rush it I have no doubt it'll be bigger and better than anything else in the hand held market.

Hopefully it will be as reliable as the 360.

About that 360 reliability, I certainly hope they improve it a bit more, the first generation were a bit flaky. I love the console and have one, just the HW quality is better.

I'd like to see a very improved version of remote play on the xbox 180. The psp just doesn't cut it in that area. I'd like the xbox 180 to be able to used as a fully functional controller with a screen. This way I can walk away from my tethered 360, and play games/movies wherever I want to play them. It should also be a media center extender; video out would be great as well. If everything is moving towards interconnectedness, a controller/handheld like this would be ahead of its time. That is if they can get it to work. It will need wireless n. That also means a new adapter for the 360. Make the 180 so useful that it wont sit in a drawer somewhere like other handhelds. It needs to be tied into the 360 and windows as much as possible. Just imagine of all the commercials MS could use against apple then! It could use a family: hi I'm a pc (wife), hi I'm a 360 (husband), and hi I'm a 180 (kid). Then they could show some lonely nerd going hi I'm an apple.

Why xbox 180? Graphics wise it is going to be doing a 180. What else would you call it?
