Recently I got a chance to sneak a peek at Disney's new film, G-Force. No, we aren't doing movie reviews here at Gearlog, but I wanted to see if the 3D graphics were all they're cracked up to be.

Truth be told, the movie looked pretty cutting-edge. One particular scene comes to mind: It was a chase scene between special agents and the hero guinea pigs, when they "just so happen" to run into a fireworks set-up crew. Fireworks appear to fly into the audience and around the fuzzy rodents (as an epic "Carmina Burana" plays in the background). Michael Bey would be proud.

Another impressive 3D moment was at the start of the movie when someone brought up a HUD system that I can only liken to Ironman's Jarvis display. The virtual system popped out into the audience, and I felt as though I could reach out and activate it myself.

Director Hoyt Yeatman boasted in a press conference after the movie that G-Force is the "most sophisticated CG film today." With all the work that went into this film, I'd say that the statement is true. The 3D rendering was all done in post-production, and the stereoscopic imaging used to create the depth in 3D movies is nothing short of amazing. The only complaint I have about G-Force is the combination of the 3D CG and live action can be jarring at times, such as whenever there are fast camera pans.

The story itself was more or less about the power of friendship and family overcoming evil. G-Force is by no means Wall-E, but it will keep kids smiling and even make the adults chuckle, with variationson such classic lines as, "Yippie-Kay-Yay coffee maker" and "Dogs...why'd it have to be dogs?"

G-Force is PG and will be out on July 24th.
