Acer X223Wbd 22-inch LCD MonitorYesterday I started a new TechSaver series called the "TechSaver Test." These posts will put one retailer to the ultimate challenge: sales prices. Just because a retailer slashes its prices, doesn't mean that those prices are the best offers you can get. Unfortunately, most consumers don't have the time to be running around for the lowest price. But that's why I'm here. (And I get paid to do it!)

TigerDirect.com is up to bat in today's TechSaver Test. The retailer announced some limited-time price breaks on items like an external hard drive, an LCD monitor, and a DVD burner. I wanted to find out whether these deals are a home run or a strikeout. Find out after the jump.

Hammer 1TB External Hard Drive ($89.99)--Good Deal!
Once you factor in shipping costs ($8.99), this drive would cost you a total of about $98.98. But can you get it cheaper somewhere else? NOPE! Good deal verified.

Seagate 750GB SATA Hard Drive ($69.99)--Good Deal!
Once you factor in shipping costs ($7.99), this drive would cost you a total of $77.98. Browsing around the Web, this is the cheapest price you'll find, if you're buying it new, of course. Geeks.com is selling the hard drive for only $53.99 with free shipping (use code FREESTUFF), but it's in "factory recertified" condition. This essentially means the same thing as "refurbished," where it's returned to a factory to be cleaned or tested, then is sold at a lower price with a limited warranty (usually 90 days).

Acer 22" Wide LCD Monitor ($149.99)--Good Deal!
The X223Wbd 22-inch LCD monitor from Acer offers a 2500:1 contrast ratio, 5 ms response time, and a maximum resolution of 1,680-by-1,050. But is it a worthy buy at $149.99 plus $1.99 in shipping? You betcha! It's at least $20 more at stores like Wal-Mart and NewEgg.com. Good deal verified.

Lite On ESAU208-31 8x Slim External DVD Burner ($59.99)--So-So Deal!
This DVD burner can be powered via USB or the included power adapter. Add the shipping costs ($7.99), and you can have the Lite On DVD Burner for a total of $67.98. Really, though, there's got to be a better deal than that! NewEgg.com is offering a cheaper price of $64.99, with free shipping (sale ends June 30). Sure, you're only saving a couple of dollars, but in this economy, that means a lot!

Well, three out of four ain't bad at all.

Good idea for a column - thanks!
I've always found good prices @ TigerDirect, and they're pretty easy to work with if something needs to be returned.

Thanks, Adrian! I know that I'm always curious as to whether a retailer's "sales" are really good bargains or not, so I'm glad you like it.

I've also always thought that TigerDirect has really great deals in most cases, too. So I was glad to see that the deals I researched were worth it.
