Motorola this week agreed to sell its DOCSIS 3.0-certified Motorola
SURFboard SB6120 cable modems through Fry's Electronics stores. This is
the first time consumers will have access to DOCSIS 3.0 modems,
previously available only to cable operators. Internet users will be
able to increase download/upload speeds up to 4 times faster with
DOCSIS 3.0 modems.
The DOCSIS standard was developed in the late 90's and was quickly
adopted by every cable service provider in the U.S. Today, cable
operators use the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications
(DOCSIS) to provide data access through the cable modem termination
system (CMTS). This system combines data packets with RF signals so
that homes can receive Internet and cable TV signals over the coaxial
cables.
The CMTS is also capable of filtering and shaping network traffic,
so providers can control the amount of data and speed of the cable
network. Cable service providers can also provide VoIP-based phone
service through CMTS. VoIP is offered through a piece of equipment
called the embedded multimedia terminal adapter (EMTA). The VoIP
service requires high speed Internet.
The DOCSIS 3.0 standard provides network enhancements such as channel bonding and IPv6, and supports IPTV. Channel bonding allows cable service providers to increase network speeds in the hundreds of megabits per second, and possibly in the gigabits per second in the future.
Because cable networks share their Ethernet traffic, a user's Internet speed can vary depending on how many users are connected the same CMTS segment. With the SURFboard SB6120, you can take advantage of the shared network throughput and squeeze more bandwidth out of your cable provider.

Shiny! I wonder if you can order these online...
Then, you'd have to have a way to confirm that DOCSIS 3.0 is available in your area, right? Hmm. I don't have a lot of faith in my cable company's front-line techs to know the answer to that question.

Just upgraded to the Ultra service @ Comcast, listed as 22/5, getting 30/8. Had issues getting it set up, install tech and phone techs no help. Install tech said it was his first. Finally got it working OK, but I am sure more issues will arise, thats the bane of being on the ver 1.0 of anything.
Modems GUI is the sparest I have ever encountered, literally only one thing it can accomplish-a software reset and reboot, also note "there is no" hard reset button??
