Apple_iPhone_Pics.jpgReading Walt Mossberg's review of the Palm Pre is amusing, because Mossberg obviously has the next iPhone and can't talk about it. Read between the lines: He's straining to compare the Pre to the un-announced iPhone on his desk. He wants to do it so badly. But he can't, because that would steal Apple's thunder.

When you're suffering from a case of NDA-itis that badly, it's no surprise when things slip out around the edges. In this case, Mossberg confirmed that Apple will indeed release an iPhone next week. And did I mention that he probably has it?

"I'd note that the new iPhone to be unveiled next week will have lots of added features that could alter those calculations," he writes.

Wording is important here. He couches many of his other iPhone predictions in "I expect" or "rumor" language: "I expect to see an iPhone with up to 32 gigabytes of memory, video recording, a higher-resolution camera, a compass, and greater operating speed. Plus, there are persistent rumors that Apple will announce at least one iPhone at a drastically lower price than $199."

But the first sentence is declarative, definitive: that new iPhone is to be unveiled next week. Not "expected to" or "rumored to." We'll be there at the WWDC on Monday morning at 10 AM PT, and we'll be liveblogging.

Anyone have an idea how long it will take for the phones to be for sale if (when) they announce it at the WWDC? Not sure what the time lines were for the previous versions since I'm new to ATT and Apple.

Geez...is that a 6 month release schedule? Typical Apple customer gouging, turn on new features every 6 months and call it a new phone!

Actually, roddog, it's a 1 year refresh schedule.

I can't wait to get my hands on that new iphone! Years ago I had to fly to Walt Mossberg's house to deliver a hard drive and you are probably right about him having it! Exciting concept to have mobile video recording and better camera. thanks!

'to be unveiled' at WWDC was expected for a while, hasn't it?

More important would have been 'to be on sale', but that seems now fixed on July dates.

I can't wait to get my hands on the new iphone! Years ago I had to hand deliver a hard drive to Walt's house and remember how important that first review is for a product. He was a nice guy and if Apple did the right thing with larger capacity, video recording and better camera it will be a winner.

Can't believe this. Are you all nuts? He means the launch of iPhone os 3.0 next week. Like after next week, iPhone would get copy-paste etc and the difference between pre and a iPhone will be very less.

Please dont come up with a prediction after identifying some grammatical mistakes in a post.

@Tape. I am officially going to start using the ter "You are officially penalized 4 internets" in daily conversation.

The author of this post has misinterpreted the word "unveiled" to mean "released for sale" whereas Mossberg obviously just means that it will be shown to the public for the first time- something that we already knew would happen.

I CAN'T WAIT.

I have been using the iPhone over at Interactive iPhone.com and I really like the iPhone interface so much that I am going to get one. But I figured I better wait till the new one came out. Next week would be perfect!

I too am reaching the end of my Sprint contract (this month), and would like to get this new iPhone with AT&T if I can get it. I refuse to camp out in a line for 48 hours or anything to get one though. So, if they are available, I'll get it.

and what are they going to do when the 4g network comes out

New iPhone may have a couple cool new features, but I'm sure it'll still be true that "a good iPhone is a broken iPhone (jailbroken)". Apple knows they have a very popular product. They're going to keep milking their cashcow and not allow very many cool or useful features to be readily available. They've created a huge "side" market also; they're not going to jeopardize that either (apps and accessories are available to overcome hardware shortcomings; iPhone is like the WordPress of the mobile phone industry).

With that said, I'll still get the new one as soon as possible.

they need to include the feature of picture messaging (so you can send and receive pictures from people) ! Most other phones have this, and they need to include it in the new iphone !

To hii: Picture messaging or MMS is going to be included in the 3.0 firmware update, which means it will be in the new iPhone.

Must say - I've had the 16GB iPhone since its release, and the honeymoon is long, long over. The real game killer for me is the lack of a physical keyboard - text messaging and email is just too painfully slow to be of much use (and I'm still pretty fast at it) - but I expect my tools to become instruments in my hands that I don't have to think about. On the iPhone I have to pay WAY too much attention to *how* I'm typing instead of concentrating solely on the message itself. No good.
