To be perfectly honest, I wasn't especially excited about the forthcoming Zune HD--not until I actually got the chance to have some hands-on time with the device. That opportunity presented itself last night, during a Microsoft event in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood. The Zune wasn't exactly the centerpiece of that show--that honor almost certainly went to Beatles Rock Band (which, for the record, was a blast).

In fact, the Microsoft rep who was talking up Zune actually slipped the HD from a pouch that he was holding in his pants pocket. The software on the thing still isn't final, but the device was able to play video, which looked pretty snazzy on that 480 by 272, 16:9 widescreen OLED. It should also be noted that Microsoft's Zune Insider podcasts have revealed that the Zune HD will use Nvidia's Tegra chip.

The hardware itself looks very sleek. The device is a lot slimmer than I had originally suspected. Microsoft is certainly starting to edge in on the iPod in the aesthetics department. Check out another up close picture of the device after the jump.

The Zune HD is due out in Fall of this year. No word on pricing.

Wow - that thing really is slim! Looks good, I'm kind of looking forward to it. I mean, it's still a Zune, but that can mean both good and bad things, right? :D

I have used the Zune since it came out. We have three of them in our family and I would own nothing else. They work flawlessly and the Zune site and monthly subscription blows the doors off of anything Ipods have to offer. I hope the rest of the world catches on to the Zune with this new entry. I would be highly disappointed if the Zune and their wonderful offerings were to disappear before the rest of the world finally figures out that Microsoft really thought this thing through. I bought one for my wife last christmas and filled it with 40 hours of Elvis Costello, all free of charge with the monthly subscription. Please Amereica... check out the Zune sight and then join me for simple, inexpensive entertainment! I have NO affiliation with Microsoft. I'm just a 53 year old semi-retired hippie who wants the Zune to survive!

Can a Microsoft Zune phone, albeit slightly thicker than the new Zune HD, be far behind?

I own a Zune (30G), have been very happy and satisfied with it, my wife wanted an iPod (overpriced, overhyped, etc) but i convinced her to try mine, she was hooked! so I found her a great deal at Amazon ($175).

Zune is the best (multimedia player) kept secret .

Live in the UK and own a zune, interface is much better than the Nano G4 I bought my teenage daughter, and the zune player is far better than Itunes.
Can't wait to get full access to the social and my hands on the HD
