In a market where prepaid cell phones are booming--witness Boost Mobile's recent gain of over 760,000 customers--Virgin Mobile's announcement yesterday that it had lost 133,000 customers in the first quarter must have really stung. Nonetheless, Virgin Mobile still beat analyst earnings expectations because the company has figured out how to turn more of its prepaid customers into ones that subscribe to higher-profit "hybrid" service plans, according to MediaPost.
The report said that the company expects profits to increase further in the second half of the year, after cutting its unlimited plan from $80 to $50 in April, and the launch of its "Pink Slip Program," which offers to pay three months of service for users who lose their jobs. All of that is in response to Boost Mobile and MetroPCS, both of which began to offer $50 per month unlimited voice plans earlier in the year. Even so, Virgin Mobile is the only one of the top six prepaid cell phone carriers to lose customers this quarter, according to the article--despite introducing slick-looking new handsets like the Kyocera X-tc (pictured).

Virgin Mobile is losing customers hand and fist and this exodus can not be stopped by any accounting changes. They lack third party distribution and it is something they need to fix quickly. I know most dealers are leaving to Boost Mobile where they can get great local support and a distribution group that embraces creative distribution. If they do not rebuild their third party distribution culture that has spilled over from Helio, they will be in a serious situation.
