Zune HD pic.jpgMicrosoft has officially confirmed the existence of the ZuneHD, although key details like price and capacity are still being held back.

The ZuneHD will include high-definition 720p video output, an HD radio, a browser and an advanced touchscreen, the Seattle Times reports.

Microsoft is apparently referring to the Zune as just one of a range of "tuners" for Zune services. Another tuner? The Xbox, which will see the Zune store replace the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Since the ZuneHD was originally supposed to be announced at the E3 show next week, similar stories by The Guardian and other outlets point to a leak. If nothing else, however, Microsoft's spinmeisters have done a decent job building hype against the iPod juggernaut.

While rumors of an improved iPod nano have circulated, Apple has also done what some might have called the impossible: made the iPod look passe. Instead, Apple has fueled the application hype, an area which Microsoft has admitted it is lacking. But that's innovation for you -- it keeps charging ahead.

Interesting. Judging by the looks above, the goal may be to make something that will compete with the iPod Touch. It's kind of about time - Apple hasn't had ANY competition in that space since the iPod Touch was released, and I'd like to see some healthy opposition to keep them improving. :)
