Chavez and his Vergatario.jpgHugo Chavez has a small handheld, and he wants the citizens of his country to get their hands on it--cheap. The outspoken Venezuelan president recently revealed his Vergatario, a supercheap phone (roughly $15) with a camera, FM radio, WAP Internet access, and MP3 playback.

The president showed off his device on his TV show, stating, "Whoever doesn't have a Vergatario is nothing," which is actually pretty hilarious when you find out that vergatario is slang for penis. This comes from the man who called George W. Bush a pendejo--the guy knows his curse words.

The Vergatario's cheap price is due to government subsidies. The first 10,000 will be released this week, and the total is expected to his 600,000 by year's end.

Why would a communist dictator get into the phone
business?
Naturally to know what is being said by the people.

I think the best part of the entire story is in the opening sentence when Chavez's "penis phone" is referred to by the author as a "small handheld". That about says it all when it comes to the dictator from down South...

i wonder if everybody attacking Chavez knows why south americans dislike us so much? the things our country did down there are terrible. overthrowing elected governments, for the united fruit company, among other things we did down there.does anybody remember Chile? we want to elect our government, but god forbid anyone else does the same, especilly if they want an american style government. nothing happens in a vaccum.

Hey "stevenb", why don't you ask the South Americans how they like Hugo? Where's your statistics coming from for "South Americans" dis-liking "us"? I know lets call them on their new "penis" phones and see what they're saying.

Hey Fred, don't show your ignorance. Thanks to US policies in the past, you now have those populist, comunist-socialist cr4p governments in most of Latin America, don't you read any newspapers? I've wondered if Obama might read wako Chavez's gift, the book "Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent"...

Bryan,

Actually, verga is the slang for penis and vergatario is colloquial for something that is very good, a person who is "cool", brave, etc. Do your homework and ask Venezuelans about their colloqialisms.

@Roberto: Just from reading comments on this story around the Web, it seems that you're correct, but also that the word is likely derived from "verga" and is frequently construed as vulgar. True?
