Dell-Studio-14z-laptop-colo.jpg

Updated: We received additional specs from Dell and have since updated the post.

This morning Dell launched the newest addition to its Studio line, the 14z. This 4.3-pound system will join the ranks of the MacBook Air and Dell Adamo at .76 to 1.2 inches thin. Dell promises up to 6 hours of battery life with the system's basic 8-cell battery. Also on trend with netbooks and ultraportables, the 14z will offer mobile broadband, as well as draft wireless-N and optional Bluetooth. The USB ports will feature PowerShare USB charging, so you can charge USB-connected devices even when the laptop isn't plugged in.

Though it's slim and sleek, the new Studio will also cater to individuals looking for a media-centric system. It will feature a 14-inch 16:9 LED display with either HD and HD+ resolution, 4W SRS audio with discrete tweeters, and an HDMI port. Dell didn't skimp on graphics either, with an Nvidia 9400M GPU. Other features include a 1.3-megapixel integrated webcam, DisplayPort, eSATA connectivity, 2 headphone jacks, and an optional 8-in-1 card reader.

The 14z will also feature FailSafe theft prevention, a first for a consumer laptop. When FailSafe is engaged, the laptop's owner will be able to track network information and the ISP location, and even remotely erase selected files and render the laptop unusable until it's unlocked.

The 14z will run on an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and offer up to 500GB of hard drive space. It will come in a range of colors, including Promise Pink, Spring Green, and Ruby Red, as well as more than 120 designs from the Dell Studio collection, available in July. The laptop is available now online for a starting price of $649 and comes with a one-year limited warranty.
