Creative Zen MX.JPGCreative's last MP3 player, the Zen Mozaic, began shipping in the United States in August 2008. Now, nearly nine months later, Creative has announced its next two iterations in the Mozaic line: the Zen Mozaic EZ300, and the Zen MX.

The Zen Mozaic EZ300 is available in an 8 Gbyte model, for $79.99, beginning in June. A 4-Gbyte model is also listed on the Creative Web site, but the price isn't listed.

Additional features include a 1.8-inch TFT color display, FM radio, built-in speaker, voice recorder and alarm clock. Contacts and a calendar are also included. I'd include specifics, but the "specifications" page linked to from the Creative site generated a "404" page-not-found error.

The Zen MX looks slightly more interesting.

The credit-card-shaped MX (83.2mm x 55.0mm x 11.9mm) looks more like the back of a traditional digital camera than an MP3 player, but with the standard array of player buttons. Creative's artwork shows the MX displaying the song title in a landscape mode, although there's no indication that it can switch back and forth between portrait and landscape, as Apple's iPod can do. The screen is a more robust 2.5-inch model, however, with 320 x 240 pixels of resolution.

The Zen MX also ships with an SD/SDHC slot, as well as the FM Radio, voice recorder, and alarm clock. The MX will also ship in June, and will be available in 8-Gbyte and 16-Gbyte models for $99.99 fand $129.99, respectively.

One more thing: remember a few years back, when Creative set out to dethrone Apple as the king of the MP3 players? Well, consider this: it's 3:50 PM PDT on May 20, the day that Creative announced the new Zens. According to Google News, Gearlog is the only blog to have written about either, at least at press time. Do you think you'd ever see that with a new iPod? Me either.

Creative also announced a pair of new Aurvana earphones on Tuesday.

I own a 1st gen Zen, and it's quite a nice little player. I would definitely recommend them to anyone.

We have four Creative players in our family, and they're great. Just wish they supported Ogg-Vorbis.
