If you've been unwilling to subscribe to a service that gives you nationwide access to thousands of Wi-Fi hotspots because $22 a month seemed too steep, good news. Boingo Wireless has cut its price in half for laptop users. $9.95 now gets full access at North American locations on Boingo's virtual network (it doesn't run the hotspots, just gives you unfettered access, but it does own hotspots in several airports and on the Washington State Ferry system). Mobile users with a Wi-Fi phone can get a separate plan for $7.95 a month. There's also a global laptop plan for $59, covering 103,000 hotspots.
Boingo partners include AT&T, Wayport, and T-Mobile, so that covers places like Starbucks and McDonalds, as well as with hotels through services like iBahn.

I didn't break this story at Wi-Fi Networking News, but I was the first that I'm aware to write about. Boingo made the change quietly some time ago. A link to where you got the story idea is polite. I always link to others when I find out a lead on a story I write about.

Yes, I signed up several weeks ago at the $9.95 rate, since I travel frequently and also ride Washington State Ferries regularly. As a journalist and blogger, I appreciate Glenn Fleishman's comment. Not just the content, but his style of saying, "Hey, that was my story!" Nicely put, Glenn ... what a treat to read such simple and non-harsh words for your valid request. Bravo!

Glenn, no slight intended -- you know you have no bigger fan than me when it comes to covering the wiffie. I do try to credit other sites that blogged first (I linked to you on the CSIRO story at http://www.gearlog.com/2009/04/all_csiro_wi-fi_patent_dispute.php for example), but in this case, a friend IMed me about the price change this morning -- I didn't see your story until after I wrote this post.

BOINGO USERS BEWARE! Yes their price has gone down from $22 to $10. But, if you are a current user, THEY WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY LOWER IT. Like the sleazy tactics used by cell carriers, they will gladly bill you $22 forever for a service you can have for $10. You have to call THEM to get the price reduced. Or due like I did, cancel your account due to this bit of treachery.
