When companies start plunking down money on print ads, you know a device is coming soon. Sprint dropped a big color picture of the Palm Pre on the back of the Wall Street Journal today, paying Rupert Murdoch $264,000 for the privilege. (We've got an image of the full ad after the jump.)
The Pre has played a cameo role in Sprint's most recent TV ad campaign, popping up at the very end, but here it stands out as if to say it's the one gadget Sprint wants to associate with the Now Network. Sprint has also given Twitter a prominent role in the ad campaign, as shown by the blue bird in the picture.
AT&T started featuring the BlackBerry Bold in print ads about a month before the device launched, on November 4. Print ads also heralded the launch of the Palm Treo Pro on Sprint, but that launch process was such a mess that I don't know if the timing was intentional or not.
We still don't know when the Pre is coming out, though it will probably be sometime in May. Full ad after the jump.

Tease!
Friday, 4-17 @ 9:30AM
I just received an email from Sprint, "Meet the Palm Pre". Got excited because I had signed up to be notified when it bacame available. However, there is no announcement of it's availability or price.
April 17, 2009 10:44 AM
"Hello, Sprint, I'd like to buy one of those phones in your newspaper ad. Yeah, the one in you NOW network ad."
"Sorry, sir, we can't tell you when it's coming out or how much it will cost."
Is that the power of 'Now??'
April 17, 2009 2:13 PM
Same here about the notification from Sprint, I was hoping i would see a date....but it was ultimately just the same info that has been on the site for a couple of weeks. Can't wait for the phone though.

You guys are on crack. This phone is so DOA it's not even funny. Palm hasn't even shipped an SDK to developers yet. If you buy this phone, you're hitching your wagon to a dead horse.
April 17, 2009 2:37 PM
got the same email. what a waste of excitment. i was hoping that the email showed pricing and launch date. why keep teasing?
April 17, 2009 3:25 PM
My contract has been up for 2 months. I will wait until May 17 for a release but if it does not happen, I'm going with the Crackberry.

Apps are for people who don't have any thing better to do. If you want a good business phone I think the Pre will exceed your expectations...

Leo, I think you're the one on crack.
Palm Opens Early Access Program For Pre SDK
April 1, 2009
Today at the Web 2.0 Expo Keynote, Palm’s Michael Abbott has taken the stage to walk the audience through some of the principles driving Palm’s webOS platform, which will drive its upcoming Pre phone, which CrunchGear first revealed back in January.
...Abbott says Palm wants to expose the web environment to developers. Today they’re launching developer.palm.com, giving developers early access to the SDK.

Palm’s webOS lives up to hype, early developers say
..."It's a completely new way of thinking about an OS on mobile devices," says Christian Sepulveda, vice president of business development at Pivotal Labs. The San Francisco software development shop is building its own webOS application as well as several for third parties.
The potential power of webOS lies in three capabilities that Palm has brought together into a coherent whole. First, mobile applications are written entirely in JavaScript, HTML and Cascading Style Sheets, which are technologies that an army of Web developers has been using for years. Second, webOS was designed from the outset to run multiple applications at once and, these developers say, to minimize the well-known potential problems that arise when doing so. Third, the application model is designed in turn to fully exploit both these features, creating, these developers say, a simpler, far more intuitive user experience.

Just release the damned thing, with Palm's label or the Dell sticker the phone will be wearing soon. I'll wait, buy only through May. Then I am choosing from Sprint's other phones. And unless they buy back a good deal of that interim phone, I won't throw it out to buy the Pre.

Could be cleverly hidden on the now page. Notice the number of gps users, lol...426...
And we all know how Sprint likes to start new phone sales on Sundays...guess we'll see...

This phone looks so cool! My contract with AT&T is up in June. I currently have the original iPhone and am definitely interested in the Palm Pre.
Come June, maybe it'll be time to switch to Sprint.
April 18, 2009 5:26 PM
Tahler Do yourself a favor and do the switch. You will save a boatload of money over what you pay now and will be laughing all the way to the bank.Think about how much that iphone has cost you in the 2 years you have had it.Even if you got it at $199 which you didn't you paid over $2600 since getting it while some of us on sprint have paid less then $500 in the same time period for even better service and features. Even with the Everything Plan you wil save almost $1000 inthe 2 years =)
April 21, 2009 10:38 AM
Darn, this is the wishlist phone I've been waiting for the last 2 years. PALM, I'm sold !! Get it on single release in multiple countries(make sure Malaysia and Singapore is right on your list too;we're drooling here.....). Iphone & Blackberry is so passé.
Palm.....don't need to mull,
My excitement about to stall,
Launch it soon and then stand tall,
With multitasking, Synergy, et al,
Make the rest look pretty small,
One gadget may see the rest fall,
One phone to rule them all.

this is more of an ad for sprint's NOW network more than anything else. the average "joe consumer" probably wouldn't even notice that the phone at the bottom of the page is a pre.... palm needs ads focused on the pre to start rolling out soon if they plan on having a successful launch before the 2nd Q is up.
April 29, 2009 4:49 PM
you know what sprint am switching to AT&T am tire of waiting fo this phone yes the palm pre, i was disapointed when sprint wasnt realing the touch HD from HTC now hey have me waiting all this time for a phone that came out like 6 months ago i think sprint needs to fire there campaing manager and advertisers cause they suck so goodbye sprint hello iPHONE..
April 29, 2009 8:58 PM
I HATE THIS THERE TAKING TO LONG TO RELEASE THIS PHONE>>>>>SO THEREFORE I AM GOING TO FORGET ABOUT THE PALM PRE THAT PHONE COULD GO KICK ROCKS!!!!!!!!! >>>>>>>>>>>> ITS NOT GOING TO GET NOT SALES WHEN IT FINALLY COMES OUT BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE TIRED OF WAITING AND JUST SWITCH TO ANOTHER PHONE ..............SPRINT SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!
May 9, 2009 9:08 PM
I am getting tired of waiting. I am an ATT customer with an expired contract and I'm starting to look at the Iphone. Maybe I will just stick to GSM. the Pre will be along for everyone else some time. I don't have to wait on Sprint.
May 18, 2009 3:01 AM
I've been waiting for this phone since March.. and from what I've been reading, it's supposed to be out by mid June.. but I'm starting to get skeptical since when I called Sprint a couple days ago they still know nothing about the release date and they don't even have a single phone in for the company to test, let alone sell. But I figure, I've waited this long already.. and my contract has been up since April.. I see no harm in waiting a bit longer. However, if it isn't out by July.. I might be singing a different tune. Either way.. I hope the phone is as awesome as it looks like it's going to be!
