maron cigarettes.jpg

Over the past six months or so, electronic cigarette manufacturers have been pushing their products in a big way. Not to the general public--not yet, at least. While the devices have managed to get something of a foothold in Asian and European countries, the concept of an electronic nicotine-delivery system is going to require a good deal of positive PR before the notoriously tech-weary American populous begins to consider adopting it, especially as e-cigarettes have a much higher entry-level cost than, say, a normal pack of cigarettes.

Recently, though, we've been bombarded by several PR companies looking to get us to try their clients' products. I've been hesitant; after all, I'm not a smoker, never have been, and the idea of getting myself hooked on nicotine for the sake of a story--no matter how fascinating--isn't really one that interests me (especially at my salary).

So I needed a guinea pig--a smoker or former smoker still in the shaky-handed grip of nicotine addiction. As far as I know, no there aren't any smokers on the PCMag editorial staff. It became clear that I would have to venture beyond our office walls to find a candidate willing to risk his own well-being for the sake of entertainment--and drugs.

That someone was Marc Maron.

About two months ago I wrote a story for a Manhattan weekly, The New York Press, called "Fairly Aggressive Jews." The piece detailed a day in the life of Break Room Live, an Air America political-comedy Web video show cohosted by Maron, who, for lack of a better description, is kind of like Jon Stewart, only with longer hair and anger issues. He's also something of a recovering addict, as evidenced by the pack of bright yellow nicotine gum sitting next to him during that day's episode.

I floated the idea to Maron and BRL producer Brendan McDonald, who told me to come in to Air America the following week--and to bring the cigarettes with me.

The PR agency I was working with happily sent along an electronic-cigarette care package: the SuperSmoker starter kit, (109 Euros, or around $145). It included one cigarette (which looks like an elongated cigarette bat), an atomizer, a charger, a pleather carrying case, and two packs of filters--a nicotine and a "zero," non-nicotine filters.

I charged the "cigarette," screwed it together, and took a few practice drags off one of the nicotine-free filters. The cigarettes have an atomizer inside, which creates water vapor, a steam-like concoction that the smoker inhales for that visceral cigarette-like feeling. Electronic cigarettes are safe for indoor smoking, so the fine people at SuperSmoker changed the color of the tip to blue; it lights up when the smoker takes a drag. Our editor-in-chief, Lance Ulanoff, was amused by the idea of my smoking in the office and snapped the following picture.

brian smokes.jpg

As a non-smoker, I thoroughly enjoyed myself, I imagine for similar reasons that kids used to enjoy candy cigarettes. But without nicotine, what's the point, really? What these things required was a true connoisseur of nicotine in its many forms. What these things required was a Marc Maron.

I went to Air America last Tuesday morning, to shoot a segment with Maron for BRL, pleather pouch stashed in my messenger bag. The segment would ultimately be aired on the show under the title "Pusherman," with the eponymous Curtis Mayfield track serving as background music as I walked into the office that Maron, Seder, and McDonald share in Air America's midtown New York headquarters. Fitting--there is something shifty in the casual delivery of drugs, classy pleather case or no.

Maron, for the record, seemed to really like the e-cigs. "It's good," he smiled after his first drag. "I'm gettin' good, I'm gettin' well. I'm gettin' right." A ringing endorsement from a man who knows his way around a pack of smokes. I left the cigarettes at the Air America offices for a week for Maron to use.

The third-party reaction, as you've deduced if you watched the above video, was mixed at best. Electronic cigarettes certainly don't have the reek of real cigarettes, but, "They smell like a damp, stale ashtray" likely won't be popping up in SuperSmoker's press materials any time soon. Seder, who also took a couple of drags, was similarly unimpressed, adding, "It's weird...it tastes like cloves."

I paid Maron a follow-up visit. After seven days with the SuperSmokers, he was markedly unenthusiastic. He had smoked through a few of the filters and then sort of gave up, pleading a headache and complaining that they just aren't as cool as smoking a pack of real cigarettes.

Asked if he would "pimp" (my word, sorry) the products for the Danish company, Maron responded:

There's something cool about smoking. I don't know if it was established by the Marlboro Man, or what... But there's nothing cool about this. I don't know what this is. It isn't being presented as a way to quit smoking. It's being presented as an alternative, but I can't see how this wouldn't lead to cigarettes, and I don't think of it as a way to stop smoking.

So, will electronic cigarettes catch on in the States? Maron answered with a decided "No."

Of course, that didn't stop him from stashing the box of SuperSmokers back in his desk as I left.

Smoking is kinda cool...cancer ain't. These are a great product. I got mine from a website in Michigan called SafeSmokes.net and have been able to quit my 2 pack a day habit. I'm still using the nicotine, but I got to tell ya that the hacking cough I had is history. I have better breathing too. The best $48 I ever spent.

I don't know anything about the supersmoker cartridges but from this review the brand doesn't sound very good. None of my e-cigarettes emit an odor. Additionally, if it gave him a headache it's likely that the nicotine level he was using was too high for his current gum-strength tolerance.

The scare that it's some kind of gateway product is pretty funny. People who want to smoke cigarettes can get them on any corner. Expensive, inconvenient products generally don't serve as an entre.

I started using the Liberty Ecig in Jan and have not smoked a regular cig since. I smoked for 17 yrs and quit easily using this. Im also off the nicotine now but still enjoy using my ecig. I love using different flavor cartridges. I feel great. He didnt know when to stop using it(you use it like a reg cig, about 10 minutes) He didnt know how much nicotine he was getting(READ THE INSTRUCTIONS) Just another attempt to put down the ecig. Anyone that uses this knows the benefits. I was paying over $200 a month for regular cigs, now i pay $20 to $30 a month for cartridges.

Please keep in mind when you read this article that their are dozens of different types of electronic cigarettes along with dozens-if not more- types of cartridges and flavored juices. I got my first e-cig 2 weeks ago and havent smoked a regular cig since. No more coughing, no more ashes, burn marks, lighters, cigarette butts, and about 3$ a day back in my pocket. I call that a win-win.

I've been loving my "e-cig" for almost five months. Completely tobacco free. They do have a bit of learning curve and it is not the same as smoking a cigarette, it is slower, more like a cigar or pipe. I could care less if they are "cool".

Still smoked a cigg like once a day or so. Ended up buying one off of puresmoker.com bc of a buddies advice and thats all it took for me to quit. Theirs produced more smoke and I got the coffee one which tasted amazing. havent had a "analog" cigg since

The guy who owns Liberty Stix went to high school with me. I smoked for over 10 years, but he hired me and I....along with everyone of his employees are now ALL ex-smokers.

It's been only a few weeks for me, but some of his employees are smoke free for 6 months.

Our product has no smell. I love it, espescially the coffee flavored cartridges!

Liberty Stix, is in no way affiliated with Liberty Smoker, please do not be confused. www.LibertyStix.com is premium brand, with a proprietary American Made Formula in our own Liberty Stix cartridges. Our cartridges are made and filled in America, Willoughby, Ohio...to be exact. We are not to be confused with other brands that have their formulas made and shipped from China.

Smoking is horrendously offensive and for the most part I have found smokers to be equally offensive. I was cussed out by a smoker because I had a coughing fit after passing her stinking cloud.
Ecigs may be less annoying, but I fear it will not make people who use them less annoying. It will just prove to show them for what they really are, drug addicts. Their drug of choice may still be legal, but they are still drug addicts no better than tweakers.

Do you even know whether these e-cigarettes are safe or dangerous before sucking nicotine and chemicals into your lungs? The American Cancer Society, Cancer Action Network, American Heart Assn and American Lung Assn -- all respected -- all agree that electronic cigarettes should be pulled off the market. The World Health Organization says they may be highly poisonous and that the product makers are committing fraud by using the WHO log and name in advertising and packaging. The makers of e-cigs claim that they are safe but have absolutely no scientific studies to back up their claims. No evidence. No proof. Just their word: "hey suckers, believe us so we can make money."

Ethic Soup blog posted an excellent article on the subject at:

http://www.ethicsoup.com/2009/03/hey-hey-whaddaya-say-are-ecigarettes-safe-eh.html

The cost of stopping your cigarette habit does not have to be breathing toxic poisons into your lungs from a pretend cigarette!

Well...im not a PR person...just a normal heavy smoker of 34 years of almost 2 packs a day! I have in the past tryed to quit and of course nothing worked...always went right back. 2 Days ago I bought the e cig..havent smoked a "real" ciggerette since and will never again!! I love this product!!! No cravings, no chemicals, no ash, no buts,NO smell, no 2nd hand smoke, no inhaling 4000 chemicals! You say what u all want but this is truely a winner and TY to who ever invented it! Dont look for FDA aproval anytime soon i would think...tobacco companies and pharacuticals...watch out LOL. This is a smoking alternative and not tobacco yet its not a stop aid. Just for some reason many are finally kicking the habit on it! LOL Within the next few weeks i plan on being Nicotine free! o yeah i bought the pen one from http://www.ecigcompany.com/
I love my ecig!! I also love the fact i could continue it if i wanted with the 0 mg cartridges just cause, o by the way...i like to smoke!

I have been smoking so long that I don't remember what it felt like to not smoke. I started at 13 and am now 35. 22 years I've smoked. I bought njoy electronic cigarette last week. On Monday I started using the ecigs. I smoked one cigarette on Tuesday and haven't wanted one since. The patch, gum and cold turkey all just made me want to smoke more.
I can honestly say now that I am so done with smoking :D. The ecig may not be better than actual quitting but it sure beats the health risks from smoking traditional cigarettes.

I think everyone should try it :D

Yeah, nice comments =P Lol, all look pretty useless to me.

In my mind, there is just no way this is going to taste anything like my marb reds. It just isn't. It's like comparing a veggie burger to a real grilled burger. If it isn't killing you, its just not gonna be as good.

So, yeah...I dunno what the point would be. I'd say either keep smoking, quit cold turkey, or use the patch. These seem useless altogether.

Andrew, you really need to try them, buy a decent kit and if in doubt try the 36mg strength liquid, you'll never want a tobacco cigarette again :)

Althuogh most of these testimonials sound like the work of a PR firm, I am convinced that there is a benefit to these e-cigs. I would like to try it before I pass judgement. The only thing is, I want to buy American. I used to smoke Marlboro lights before switching over to the Black and Mild regulars. Yes, I do inhale them. Can anyone tell who the American Manufacturers are and any recommendations for the strength and taste I would need.

Thanks

just buy a pen style e cig and youll see. It has nothing to do with taste, believe it or not. Its all about the nicotine. If your getting that youll be satisfied. Using the cartridges and ordering E liquid to top off the cartridges to give you the throat hit or lung hit you need is all you need to never pick up a regular cigarette again. Totally wicked has great E liquid i find and great service. I bought my e cig from ecigcompany.com/

never had a problem with either. No PR here...just telling you what worked for me. Today im smoke free and nicotine free after smoking almost 2 packs a day for 34 years. Who would of thought? So before ya knock it, try it, you just might surprise yourself.

If your looking to quit smoking, great! If your not dont! Either way, E cigs offer 4000 less chemicals and cancer causing agents. Do the math...which is LESS safe?? All i know is i had no intention to quit smoking and i did. I love to smoke. Yet for some reason i was able to. I truely believe its because the e cig takes care of ALL aspects of the smoking addiction. I also believe because you can smoke (or vape, as its called) anytime you want its not like your deprived of anything. I started with high cartridges and went down to low cartridges of nicotine over a several week period. Today I vape Zero nicotine cartridges and use the E cig only when i want. My last goal is to put this down for good. But hey ...why would i if i dont inhale and i have NO chemicals or nicotine in this thing? I will eventually, but for now i feel great and love the idea that i finally found a product that worked!

Buy an E cig ..you wont be sorry!

Is anything really safe? The air you breath, and the water you drink today is tainted. Coffee and sugar are not particularily safe, yet millions consume them daily. Household chemicals you clean your house with, and pesticides you spray your garden with, all call disease in the users as well. E-cigs, may also not be completely safe, but they do sound like a better alternative for the die hard tobacco smokers. Remember too, the FDA and big Pharma are afraid of losing dollars on anything they cannot control themselves. Incidentally, big pharma and the FDA long ago approved 'nicotine' products, and even a nicotine inhaler long ago, determining it to be safe. They also approved poly ethylene glycol in food and in colonoscopy prep solutions that use PEG. These same ingredients are also found in the making of anti-freeze, yet they and the non smoking public are questioning its safety only in electronic cigarettes? God, I'm tired of the hypocrisy! By the way, I just had a colonoscopy and had to drink that poison...made me sick to my stomach too! LOL So,FDA, what is it, safe, or not safe? If you are going to ban it, then you better ban everything else that nicotine and glycol are in, that you already long ago approved. On the other hand, they still keep the very carcinogenic real tobacco cigs around...wonder why? MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These things are great. The atomizers need a serious redesign. Short lifepsan with chainsmoking, impossible to clean, random effectiveness (osmetimes they smoke like a mofo yet lack flavor even with dripping and sometimes they give minimum smoke with rich vibrant flavor)

These could be a mega billion dollar industry- hope so maybe then some $ will go to a mor effective/cleanable-self cleaning atomizer.

I love people who say they don't know anyone who thinks smoking is cool. Then you don't know very many people between the ages of 15-30, or the people you know don't announce "Wow, look how cool that guy looks smoking!" (much more likely). If no one thought smoking was cool, then no one would start. No one's smoking to get high or to just destroy their health for no reason.

To the people that say the comments for electronic cigarettes sound "suspicious" it's because they're an incredible product (if you don't buy overpriced, low quality versions) and the people that have switched to them know this and are struggling to keep them legal so that we don't have to go back to horrible tasting, health destroying tobacco cigarettes.
