More specifically, it's a Rubik's Cube-inspired dodecahedral puzzle that features four rotating slices per face, resulting in nearly "1,000 pieces to scramble and solve."
Designed by Andrew Cormier and completely hand-built by Jason Smith, the mind-boggling puzzle was assembled from polyJet 3D-printed masters and an FDM 3D-printed core. Over 75 hours of work went into creating the masterpeice, including:
20 hours on masters and molds
12 hours casting parts
30 hours cleaning up parts and sanding
7 hours assembling all 1000 parts
6 hours stickering
The project took over two months from start to finish, and in the end, Smith placed the last piece of the (still-unstickered) puzzle in his car during a lunch break. Only after the application of more than 1,200 vinyl stickers was the Petaminx finally complete.
So, where can you get one? Well, "one" is key word in that query, because the puzzle is totally one-of-a-kind. That said, it's currently up for sale on eBay, and even though there's more than a week left until the auction ends, the price has already surpassed $2,600 (but hey, free shipping!). May the geekiest bidder win.
