BlackBerry_Curves.jpgTalk about declaring a price war: MetroPCS has launched their first BlackBerry Curve 8330 smartphone with an unlimited rate plan. The $50 personal rate plan includes unlimited talk, text, web browsing, MMS and BlackBerry email access through BlackBerry Internet Service, while an extra $10 gets you the BlackBerry Enterprise Server version.

That means it's the first smart phone from the Cricket, Metro, and Boost Mobile unlimited, no-contract group, and the price is fully half of what Sprint is charging for the same thing via their Simply Everything plan—which was a good deal until about 13 seconds ago.

There's always a catch, although this one is geography-related: the MetroPCS Curve is only available in the older 1900 Mhz MetroPCS markets, not the many newer 1700 Mhz markets. That means NYC, Boston, and Philadelphia are out for now. And to be fair, Sprint is throwing in its optional services, like GPS navigation and mobile TV, although you have no choice but to take them.

Regardless, the MetroPCS BlackBerry Curve 8330 will be available at Best Buy stores beginning today in the following areas: Greater Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Detroit, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento. By the end of the month, the phone will also be in MetroPCS stores. Go get 'em. I currently pay $345 per month for 3 Blackberries with data and voice. METROPCS please launch nationwide coverage!!! Please Please Please!!! I would switch in a heartbeat. The fact that your data service only work in major cities and the voice plan will incur $.19 per minute fees when "roaming" is the deal breaker for me. But in the mean time, I will still call my current provider and talk to them about this new MetroPCS blackberry plan. You would be surprised in what you can get just by talking to people. Maybe I may get some sort of credit on my bill just for thinking about switching.

Don't forget their service sucks A$$. Don't pay for the insurance it's a scam. Previous Metro User, phone never worked at home and drops calls like a bad habit!

The other thing they don't mention is that you will be paying a very unsubsidized $449 for the Curve. That's just criminal.

Hey, now Blackberry users get to experience Metro's very high dropped call rate - enjoy! Don't worry about the $50 either - it will be over $60 after you pay all of their hidden fees.

I have used MetroPCS in the SF East Bay Area for 5 years, and it has gotten better every year. I almost never have dropped calls & find it very reliable. I even disconnected my landline. The downside is the corporate store employees in our area are the rudest people ever, so I go to an independent store (like 4D wireless) when I need something that doesn't require quick corporate help.

I have had metropcs for 4.5 years in the Atlanta area. I never have dropped calls, or any quality problems.

As far as the complaint that the bill is more after "hidden" fees, that is with every carrier. They all charge tax, and recover regulatory fees from the customer, so do land line companies.

Some answers for you ...

@Bionic: MetroPCS will NEVER launch nationwide coverage. That's how they stay so cheap! But they are expanding to more cities.

@curvye: MetroPCS is a CDMA EVDO network. They will not work with GSM phones.

@lyne: Actually, it looks like MetroPCS does cover Vineland ... and they'll expand to the surrounding parts of southern NJ soon.

@mike: It has GPS, but no Wi-fi.

Hmmm.... There's an infrastructure and personnel cost that cannot be avoided.

I use the Curve from T-Mobile. It has issues maintaining a connection to any wireless router (probably a Blackberry issue - not T-Mobile). But T-Mobile has excellent coverage and probably the best technical support I've ever experienced - in the top 3 of support from any service provider (AmEx, Schwab, and T-Mobile).

I've got exceptionally deep experience with technology, and 25 years of pushing the limits of tech support. I can hardly believe T-Mobile can provide the level that they do in this day of cheap outsourcing and mediocrity.

The negative is that from what I've read here, it's triple MetroPCS. You get what you pay for - there is simply no way around it.

I've had Metro PCS for several years now and I'm happier with their reception and lack of dropped calls than I ever was with Sprint, T-Mobile or AT&T. And it's 50 bucks. The only problem I've had with Metro is the limited selection of phones. With this blackberry option I have no more complaints. You can also bring your blackberry from other carries and have them flashed for metro pcs right in the stores for only 40 bucks.

Here in Fort Lauderdale the service has been very good for the last 4 years that I have had Metro PCS. I havec3 phones and pay $145.00 per month. I have gone to Louisianna, Las Vegas and New York with the phone with very little problems. I have even called Russia on my Metro. You can't beat it, and now with smart phones on Metro, I think the other carriers have something to worry about.

I just bought it... yes, it's $450, (they gave me $50 for trading in the old one, so, it was $400)
I had Metro PCS for almost 6 years, (I switched to verizon about a year ago, and went back right away to my old metro, I had to pay 150 for not continuing with the verizon contract, but that was the last money they would take from me)
I love metro PCS, it is all as they say, I'm paying $105, including taxes, for 2 lines, with unlimited internet, text, e-mail, etc.
Drawbacks: the GPS does not work, does not have WiFi, and for the service... yes, some areas you dont get signal, but it has improved, and I believe it will continue to do so; and other bad thing is the metropcs customer service...it is actually inexistent. But if you add up everything, I think metropcs is the best option.
I almost love this new phone -except that the GPS does not work, and it does not have WiFi :-(

I have two lines with Metro, and the coverage is great in TX. I love metro, but beware before you buy a nicer sprint or verizon phone to have switched over, they do NOT tell you that you will no longer be able to download anything (@metro), send OR recieve picture messages, bluetooth sounds/ringtones over, OR get on the internet... so I spent $300 on a phone that can ONLY send/recieve TEXT messages, and make calls....

awesome.

and $500 for a blackberry that is $179 everywhere else... come on metro...be reasonable...

personally metro is the best company i've had so far! great service VERY few down times or interruptions and these bad things are mostly because i transferred my crappy razr from sprint. my samsung from metro had full bars just about anywhere here in florida inside buildings and 1 bar even in elevators, the best part is the price, they got that part right i do $45 talk n text all day no contract no bull- low bill $50 after tax... i've had sprint, and at&t, they suck completly mess up bills poor customer service -by the way metro service rocks. -Im a total fan cause it works for me. P.S. best reception is samsung (so far had 3 phones) but samsungs are fragile phones...
im not too hot about the new curve (for metro) being 450 too pricey but still getting way better raising the bar, and the service not the price! -299 is good for a phone like that bring in the touch screens!! :D

FOR metro: Keep it cheap, with great service and u will always have loyal customers! Thanks metro!

I have the metro pcs family plan in florida and it rocks! we pay 138 dollars a month including taxes (which everyone on every carrier pays) for 4 unlimited lines. As for those saying dropped calls, umm i dont think i have ever had even one. My husband travels all over central florida with his phone, let me tell you 1000000 times better coverage than sprint, which we had before. I am excited to see the service expanded to more areas around the country-but unless you travel all the time, its not an issue. I would be the first person to let everyone know if a company was shady...and im not saying the customer service is fabulous, but its really nice to not have to worry about minutes, overages and unexpected huge bills (also with sprint). I guess im saying if you are a techy person who wants this certain phone with 50 different functions to work flawlessly with an economy provider i think you should be realistic, but if you are regular joe who talks and texts a bunch this is perfect. BTW there is a way to tether your metropcs phone for internet.

Thats why these phones are cheaper, they will make their money off roamong charges because they will be using the verizon towers. How do I know this? I asked a metro pcs dealer and he told me. So, verizon, the most expensive phone service out when roaming off their towers, think of how much metro pcs will rape you for on those roaming fees. These phones are good for people who really don't leave their city like that. At the end of the day, their is really no way out of getting cheap cellular service, only CHEAPER, and you risk losing features that you either like or need.

I can't wait to get mine, the price is a sting, but I'm sure it's worth it. This is probably the best phone they'll have out for a while.

And actually, I've had Metro PCS for years, and I barely have had any of my calls dropped, and plus I get service almost anywhere. They're growing bigger for a reason. And hidden fees? What hidden fees? I've had the $50 unlimmited plan ever since I've had MPCS, and my phone bill is the same everytime, $55.83.

I just switched from sprint to metro. While I am in my immediate calling area...great, but if I am out of my calling area, what a total waste!!! Callers hear that my phone is disconnected and customer service people say "the recording is what we have and we can not do anything about it" I have a treo 755p and I am looking to go back to sprint or find a way to try virgin mobile

North of Sacramento, CA at a place called Cache Creek Casino, MetroPCS won't work inside the casino, but just go to the top of the parking garage ( or just outside) and it works fine.

i wonder if i could use my old at&t blackberry phone (free)instead of dishing out the whopping almost $500 for the Metro phone, and wether either one could be tethered to my Mac for internet use

I've been with Metro for almost 2 years in the Los Angeles area. Service is ultra-reliable (there are two pockets around town where my calls will drop but i had the same issue with T-Mobile, Sprint, and Nextel over the years).

A friend who recently relocated abroad left me her Blackberry which was used on the Sprint network. I didn't want to spend $100 per month for the Sprint everything plan. While Metro advertises that they will flash "any" CDMA phone onto the network for $40 or so, there are a few caveats.

I contacted Metro dealers and even Metro customer service and you'll get one of several answers: they'll say that they can't flash Blackberry's or other smart phones. Or, they'll tell you that they can flash it, but that only the voice and text features will work. Or, they'll say that they won't flash blackberry's because they now sell their own.

A short time later, I ran into a Metro dealer who told me that flashing the Blackberry does work sometimes, but it depends on what type of software you use in order to successfully unlock the major features. I found a guy in Redondo Beach who said he could do it.

He loaded the software and within 15 minutes it was done. It took about a day for my number to get transferred, but once it did, all the features worked. Phone, text, multi-media messaging, and browsing. As far as email, you have to use the browser, but that's not a big issue.

What's nice is that i now have a powerful, feature-rich phone that works on the metro $45 per month plan. I was able to import my address book and contact list from Outlook, from which i can place calls - or - the voice activated dialing system built into the phone works without having to set anything up.

The guy who flashed mine said that if i ever called customer service, not to tell them it was a Blackberry. He didn't say why.

So, can you flash a Blackberry 8330 curve from Sprint or Verizon onto Metro? Absolutely. You just have to find a local dealer who CAN and is willing to do it for you. Right now they are far and few in between, but it's my understanding that the appropriate, reliable software is becoming more and more available.

Good luck to one and all!

I have had metro pcs for 4 years now in tampa fl. I love the price and the service. Had a few dropped calls amonth with my old nokia and got a new one 2 years ago... no problems untill i dropped my phone down a flight of stairs. Travel to and from miami regularly and works great there and all over. Gonna get a 8830 and flash it to metro through my wifes upgrade at Verizon. heard that you can have unlimited web and picture message now with it to!

For the people saying that metropcs price on the blackberry is unreasonable I suggest do some math. If you have to pay $100 per month with a different carrier(usually more)to use a blackberry curve and its features you will pay $2400 or more over the length of the required 2 year contract. This is assuming they give you the phone for free which most places do not. If you pay the $399 for the curve from metro with the $50 unlimited plan you will pay $1600 over the course of 2 years (including the cost of phone). That is $800 less than the cheapest offering out there. The cool thing is with metro you dont need to keep it 2 years. So, if a better phone is available next year you can go buy it and still come out ahead of what you would have spent with the other carrier. This is a no brainer unless you travel out of network very frequently.

I just bought the blackberry. I am in the los angeles area. I already read about the not so good coverage or dropped calls etc. I just want to clairify the extra fees part. All the other companies like verzon and tmob and at/t charge tax like anyone else except the tax percentage is based on a higher phone bill. LOL... I think a dropped call once in a while is worth 40 dollars extra in my pocket at the end of the month.

Hi anybody that flashes a phone to metropcs...Like a pda, smartphone, blackberry....You have to set your phone to NOT Roam...When your phone roams, people who call you will hear "This number has been disconnected"....I had a htc touch flashed to metro and people kept telling me my phone was sayin disconnected when they called me, I went to the metro corp stores and went to local dealers and I google but nobody could explain why this was happening....This frustrated me to no end. Yea that was it so pass the word!
