Anton Grimes, an Australian design student, is hoping to improve on the age-old idea of bike sharing by creating a network of communal electric scooters, according to Autopia. Grimes believes his Link Scooter System would fit in perfect with Sydney's 2030 plan for increased sustainable living.
"With increasing demand on an already over-stretched transport infrastructure, it makes sense to shift the way that we move by taking up less space per individual while in transit," Grimes wrote in an official project description. "The energy required to move the individual is also greatly reduced by reducing the size and weight of the vehicle."
The aluminum-and-plastic scooters can be recharged via stations affixed to light posts around the city, the report said—a fabulous idea considering that the light posts are already connected to the electrical grid. A ZipCar-like system could be employed for people to sign up, grab a scooter, and drive it to a destination hub to be recharged there.
