When Sascha Segan first looked at BlackBerry's first touchscreen phone, he wasn't particularly impressed. While he liked some of the features--particularly the clicking screen and the quick Internet access--he found the Storm to be a lot more buggy than he bargained for.

RIM's CEO acknowledged as much, saying that buggy smartphone OSes are the "new reality." Whether or not you agree with that, it certainly seems to be the case that smartphone manufacturers tend to release products before all the kinks have been ironed out.

Since then, RIM has issued some software fixes for the phone. If you're a BlackBerry Storm owner, we want to know, how is the phone working for you now? Was it buggy when you first got it? Have subsequent updates helped? Let us know in comments.

This is the phone that will probably make me leave verizon. It freezes, the screen doesn't turn with the phone 50% of the time, when doenloading pictures from pc it decides what the pictures are going to look like ( shaded, cut in half, partly blacked out, etc . no one cares anyway

I bought my BlackBerry Storm back in November; The bugs that I had were the odd lockup and software reset where it would wipe all my settings and reinstall VodaFone's horendous bastardised version of the BB browser.

Since then I've had very little trouble with my device, I really like it, but it has parts that need improvement. There is NO standby option, the lock option stops me hitting keys in my pocket, but it doesnt turn off the screen - if you hit the display, it still lights up, sucking batteries. Needless to say I've bought a second battery pack.

All in all I'm happy with my device, not so much with the 50eur per month fee I have to pay to VodaFone Ireland for the privelage.

I love, love my Storm. Had to replace original device and received new one with updated software and have had zero problems. I do not know what all the fuss is about!

It was slow, but as it has become faster through leaked OS's, it has become a little more buggy. With .99 it feels really stable, but has locked up from time to time. Its getting better with every OS they build and by March when the Blackberry App Store opens the Storm will be completely Rock Solid.

Yes, it was buggy. I had to return the first one. The second one is better, but I have been unable to download (or at least get to work) other applications such as opera mini and talklock. The program downloads but nothing happens. Frustrating.

I have enjoyed it %100. Find that the complaints come from blackberry newbies. Not their fault. If you have a little patience, it will grow on you. Looking forward to the upcoming blackberry app store as well as Verizon's next software launch. (if your vzw and reading this, We're waiting). The device of the future.

Idk if this I were you want to know about my blackberry. But I'm typing this on mine now after receiving an email and I must say it is treating me very well. No glitches like people often mention. Has a beastly screen that scoffs in the face of competitors. And web browsing makes me climax regularly. (and not because of porn)

I have had my storm since it first launched. I love the phone. We have five in our office and as time goes by we'll add more, since those who have them are happy with it. Most of our employees have the Curve and a few have the pearl. My son just sold his Iphone and picked up the storm. He loved his Iphone, but his problem was with AT&T. Constantly dropping calls. He has used it for two weeks and he loves it he said he liked the click screen, but he thought the iphone interface was a little better and doesn't miss wifi as much as he thought because of internet connection is great with the storm. He also like the fact he doesn't have to go online to view his mms messages and as far as email hands down his storm.

I have had mine since mid December and love it. Has so many more advantages than iphone. Not to mention Verizon phone/voice quality is so superior to AT&T. Browsing is fast, no real bugs. Had to reboot a few times, but nothing you dont do on iphones. Biggest thing they are lacking is the app store. When is this coming out?!?!

I have had it since mid december and hate it. Had the bb 8830 before this and didn't have any issues. I always though RIM produced good products until this. It's buggy and very SLOW. Typing is way harder than it should be. I keep wanting to return it but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

I love my storm. The I inial software was a bit buggy but it is fine now. I am sure the next release of software and the launch of the app center will make it downright BA

I've had the Storm since Thanksgiving (my work phone). I also have the iPhone(my personal phone). Since the Storm was an obvious attempt to compete with the iPhone, I do mention that a few times-so deal with it. :) I can't recommend the Storm over any other current model of Blackberry though.
I had become speedy on the normal BB keyboards, both QWERTY and SureType. This Storm slows me down and there's no way to speed up. You have to wait for the screen to click up before you can hit the next letter. With the full QWERTY on Storm, it is easy to hit the wrong letter. This problem is similar on the iPhone, BUT the huge difference is the iPhone does a great job of correcting the word you meant to type, while the Storm is horrible at it. I hit backspace every 5th letter to correct it! I find myself waiting until I'm in the office to type emails which I never did before.
The accelerometer sometimes does not flip the screen when I turn the device. The internet is extremely slow most of the time (esp. compared to iPhone). Now I don't use the Storm for pics & music, but I'm sure those are grand.
I will gladly accept a few dropped calls--although I don't experience them. (I only talk 400 min/month). With the iPhone, I'd say the phone function is what I use the least anyway.
The Storm is definitely a 1.0 product. I'm sure they'll improve with the next one...but they've got some work to do!

I was the first on line to get this phone in November. After the first update the phone gave me problems and I had it replaced. The phone still has some quirks but what new phone doesn't. It took a while to get used to the key board until I realized that the main keyboard is is right and left hand justified. It does freeze from time to time and you have to pull the battery to fix the problem. It also has problems with the bluetooth and Jawbones. Every few weeks, you have to reset the Jawbones because it forgets your commands. Yoou have to uninstall the bluetooth device , pull the b attery out of the phone and re-install.
All in all the Storm works fine...it's much better than the Curve and faster connecting to the internet.

I've had the phone for 3 weeks and I love it. I had a Windows Mobile device, which some say explains why I love it. That old device also had a full QWERTY keyboard, and I thought the Storm would slow me down a lot (I am a huge txter) but it only took me a couple days to get back up to speed. I'm still looking forward to the app store. The Facebook app is lame compared to just using Facebook's mobile site. Opera Mini installed is faster than BB's native browser, but so far no way to make it the default browser (i.e. when I click a link in my Gmail). Screen rotates quickly and never turns on in my pocket or purse. Camera takes the picture when you click the button, unlike my old device which had a 2 second shutter delay, but refresh to take a new photo is sloooooow, hopefully an OS update will fix that. But I get raves on picture and video quality. Overall I love the device and I think a couple upgrades and the app store will make me happier.

I bought my BlackBerryStorm in mid-December after my wife offered to pay my early termination fee, thus sealing the deal on the Storm vs. Bold decision I agonized over for months. As for the Storm itself, I am very pleased with it. The key to enjoying this phone is demonstrating a bit of patience as it is a first-generation product (note: iPhone users). The touch screen rotates properly most of the time but it catches up so long as you hold it ergonomically correct. It took me a couple of tries in the store with floor models to get used to typing on a touch screen but I have become more proficient. The fact that you have to push through to select the key can be viewed as a safety feature as it prevents one from texting and/or dialing while driving.

The 3.2 megapixel camera takes great photos. Other than the slight delay before photo capture, I have no complaints. One added bonus is being able to add ringtones not just to phone calls but e-mails, SMS messages, and various apps (even have one for Facebook).
In my opinion, optimizing my Storm with the addition of VZ Navigator and V-Cast Rhapsody has made it as close to an iPhone "killer" as possible. Both programs add slick navigation and an unlimited amount of access to songs.

One complaint that I would like to point out is that Verizon seems to be taking its time with their OS upgrades. Currently I am still on the 4.7.0.75 that was made available in December 2008. However, since I have Enterprise Server through my company, I have opted to stay away from taking a chance on the most recent versions that have been floating around (4.8 and 4.9) as they are not "official".

Bottom line: I made the right choice in getting the BlackBerry Storm. However, I must implore potential buyers to test it out on their own before deciding to buy it.

CONS: screen orientation/rotation is slow - sometimes I have to wait to for it to "figure itself out." Taking pics is REALLY SLOW. (I do have it setup for Hi-Res Fine pics though)
PROS: Great looking Screen, Blackberry eMail setup is best in biz, battery life is pretty good considering all the features, music player and 8G preinstalled mem card is cool so you listen to tunes and still get your calls.
Overall, I like it. Now, if Verizon, RIM and SlingMedia will work it out so i can get a mobile version of the Slingplayer on it, i wont replace it anytime soon.

The Storm led me to leave Verizon!!

After many years with Verizon I switched to AT&T and got a BlackBerry Bold 9000.

I really tried to tolerate the Storm as of the first day it was released. It was buggy then and through weeks of trying several units, including several with Beta OS's installed, I simply gave up!

For those satisfied by the large screen and graphics, I'm delighted.

However, once I got my hands on a BlackBerry Bold 9000 the difference was astounding. Where the Storm was slow, buggy, unstable, lethargic and kludgey, the BlackBerry Bold 9000 is sizzling crisp, responsive, fast, and has a bevy of quick direct access keys to even speed things along more.

Another major Verizon imposed restriction was their conscious decision to design out WiFi excluding it from the Storm. Regardless of what Verizon claims in their profuse TV Advertising Campaign, their signal is not everywhere and there are a great many locations where WiFi comes to the rescue in supplementation of any carrier's signal coverage.

Yes, there are differences between AT&T's coverage as compared to that which I was accustomed to with Verizon, but Verizon's blunder with pushing out the Storm too early has lost them a vast number of customers. A very similar consequence to that which happened when they lost customers to AT&T regarding the iPhone.

I received my Storm in December. Have had very few problems. Most of the problems I have had are software developers not having Storm specific software yet. I am sure that will change. I have had one update which made it faster and more efficient. Still have a few problems with keyboard and my big fingers. Don't like the portrait keyboard at all, I use too many acronyms which make its lists and attempts to match more confusing than it is worth.

I have had this phone from launch and I have to say this is the worse blackberry that I have ever owned. I think that they should have never released such a buggy phone. Also I think that by them releasing these leaked OS updates and letting the users be there testers is really a low blow on rim. I have to pull my battery on my phone multiple times a day and deal with missed calls email etc. This phone is garbage I am currently looking to go with the curve over this I think that this phone has potential and could be a great device but should have not been released in its current state. I feel like I got robbed. I seen that they have that level app that you can buy I am about to submit my own free app called the blackberry storm hammer cause that is what I feel like doing with this phone sometimes. Get with it RIM release another official OS and make this phone what it is suppose to

I LIKE the STORM. But I don't LOVE it. I'm very unhappy with the camera. It takes decent pictures but the whole flash and response throws everything off. People think that the picture has been taken but really it hasn't.

I've gotten used the the keyboard. I actually like it but the response time is slow. It's faster with the first hardware upgrade but still slow.

My main thing is that I want to love this phone because I love Verizon. I never get a dropped call. I've had no problem with the 3g network but my God can they please fix it so it doesn't take 2-3 seconds to go from landscape to portrait?

I'm slightly concerned that the Vodafone Storm is at the butt end of mobiles. For all it's troubles we've only had one OS update in >2mths and many commercial media options are just not available on Vodafone (Slacker Radio, Last FM, Flycast seems to have APN troubles, even YouTube and Moodio seem to be suspect - look at the VF Storm Forum). This is currently far from the multi-media all rounder expected and I'd advise anyone into media with unlimited data to head to O2 or T-Mobile and get an iPhone or Android at this point. I sense Verizon Storm users are being better looked after than Vodafone.

I am a macbook owner. So you would think that I would be in love with the iphone. Well I am but I HATE at&t. I love verizon's converage and have been a customer for 10 years so I decided to give the Storm a try because I do not want to leave verizon.
I found out after buying the phone that the RIM desktop software is incompatible with the Mac. there is software called pocketmac for syncing items but the only way to update the firmware through a computer is to use a PC! Really stupid move on RIM's part.
I also find myself shaking the phone to see if the screen will rotate the way I want it to. I want to see if the new .90 firware is the great thing everyone is claiming it to be.

We encountered the Storm in Jan '09 during our "2 year" upgrade...

My wife, son in law, & daughter think its pretty.

Very buggy in Jan '09 when delivered, software updated shorly after delivery.

Now, its a little less buggy, but still a pain.

The keyboard is just plain slow, i mean like honey in Alaska during a blizzard slow...

Handles 10 eMail accounts, but unless its a shared phone 5 or 6 should be plenty, maybe 10 is a prettier number than 5 or 6...

Most of what it does, it does well, except, of course, that pretty, very slow, keyboard entry (typing) stuff...

I'd have to pay my employees 20% less to justify productivity if they insist on using a BlackBerry Storm, the time penalty isn't very pretty, its just plain unproductive...

But its still pretty...

I've been with Verizon since the humble start. I like them pretty well.

I upgraded to the Samsung Omnia instead of the BlackBerry Storm.

I'm not sure if its pretty, but it works well, much faster than the Storm, more features as well...

Intuitive interface (Windows Mobile, go figure), but still not so pretty as the Storm, I guess ya can't have everything...

Now wife, daughter, and son in law are stuck for the next 2 years...

Not me, I've got a 'not so pretty' Omnia that works...

It doesn't look like that Apple phone, BUT it works well...

The bright side to all of this. Maybe my son in law will one day grow up to be president of something...

Hope always springs eternal...

Regards to all,
btp...

I based my decison to go Storm only on coverage. If AT%T had the coverage I would have an Iphone. I've had the phone for 10 days. No major complaints. i think that if you don't close the applications when you finish them, the unit slows down. Cloding each aplication rather than switching apps, is a drag. I which there was a "close all" button. Good battery life when standing up to friend that have Iphone.

Bought phone in Nov, received it in mid Dec. Some bugs, but loaded new software and it works OK most of the time. I hate the horizontal keyboard because I find it selects the key to the right of the one my finger is on about 20% of the time. This can't go fast because I'm always having to look to see which letter I get when I press down. I find it gets so slow the voice dialing won't work, so I have to pull the battery a couple times each week. Trying to get my enterprise email connected failed until I pulled the battery again. I can't figure out how to get my home email to be in a separate list from my corporate email.

I generally like the phone, but it has its problems. I was definitely expecting better typing for a blackberry. I could enter things a lot faster using the old Palm strokes.

I've has my Storm since it was released and have had no problems with it. I've read the lists of problems in various forums but have yet to experience any of them. All in all it looks like the Storm is off to at least as reliable a start as the iphone had.

I had my phone for 2 weeks and during that time the screen froze more times than i can remember. I took it back and got the curve instead, I loved the phone when it would actually work but when it froze, turning the phone off and on wasn't enough. I had to take the battery out and put it back in and turn the phone back on for it to work. I commute to work 1 hr each way every day so i needed a phone that i could count on. Hopefully all the qwerks will be get worked out and I might possibly buy a storm in a year or two.

I've had my Storm almost 3 wks - my 1st BB - liked the LG Dare but really wanted smartphone. This is driving me nuts and hope to swap it soon for a Curve or something that doesn't lock up, stall, and make me remove the battery to restore voice dialing! I'm told another software update is due April 1st but that's my 30-day end date - I don't dare get stuck for 2 yrs with this headache when other BB users are happy and productive. Bye bye Storm ...

I've had it for 3-4 days now. I like it alot. The screen does hang in portrait/landscape mode from time to time. It can be a little sluggish responding to commands, but other than that I like it so far. I do not like all missed called going into the messages folder... makes me think I have emails to check. We'll see.
