tag-jr-small.jpg

It's almost New York Toy Fair time (that's coming up on President's Day weekend), but LeapFrog got a jump (yeah, I said it) on the competition by giving us a peek at toys to come.

To follow on the success of the Tag (check out our review), a read-along gadget introduced last year, LeapFrog's bringing out the Tag Junior for younger kids.

As with the Tag, kids press the Junior onto words and pictures in LeapFrog's specially-made books, and Jr. interacts by reading them out loud, making appropriate noises, and so on. He's (it's impossible not to anthropomorphize here) just chunkier and easier to manipulate for smaller hands. Jr. comes with a book to start on, but others will be available as well. Coming this summer as are all the toys here. $34.99 list, for ages 2 to 4.

More new toys after the jump (I said it again).

Zippity Learning System

LeapFrog collaborated with Disney on this movement-encouraging toy for toddlers. Connect the Zippity Console up to your TV, and kids can play and learn along with Disney characters such as MIckey Mouse, Handy Manny, Winnie the Pooh and friends, and Little Einsteins by hopping on different parts of the interactive mat and using the "bopper" for upper-body movement. LeapFrog built in educational info from its online resource, Learning Path. Ages 3 to 5; $79.99.

Text & Learn

We covered this one earlier in the week, but to reiterate: Preschoolers can "text" messages to make-believe pal Scout and play various learning games. (Like kids need any encouragement to text!) Age 3 and up; $21.99.

Scribble & Write

Kids use this tablet to refine their drawing and writing skills, tracing over letters and shapes on the light-up screen. Age 3 and up, $21.99.

My Pal Scout and My Pal Violet

These interactive plush toys introduce babies to basic concepts: first words, counting, and so on. Scout and Violet can be personalized via USB with your kid's name and favorite things, then incorporating them into games and lessons. 6 months and older; $19.99.
