Honeywell logoAccording to a report filed by HDGuru, Honeywell plans to ship LCD TVs at sizes up to 82 inches on the diagonal.

The LCD TVs will actually be manufactured by Soyo, a Taiwan manufacturer that originally designed PC motherboards, but moved into the server and white-box space. And Westinghouse's Web site confirms it, with a downloadable PDF detailing the MT-HWGWT8218AM's specifications, including a gross weight of 369 pounds. The key metrics we're all interested in, however, aren't there: namely, price and shipping date.

While dynamic contrast rations might be a bit misleading, the 600 cd/m2 brightness seems like it will at least flood the room with light, probably making the MT-HWGWT8218AM unlikely to earn a PCMag.com Greentech award. At that size, however, the 1920x1080 pixel ratio might seem a little lean. Maybe if it was a 4K display...

I asked Robert Heron, our HDTV guru, what he thought.

"The Honeywell announcement is news to me as well. Any HDTV manufacturer that touts an extremely bright bright picture (500-600cd/m2) isn't making TVs to compete with the Samsung's of the world (or Vizio's latest for that matter) - this strikes me as repurposed 'digital signage,'" Heron said.

"Any LCD manufacturer can produce a super-bright picture; the more critical question is how dark is the TV's depiction of video black," Heron added. "Also, the specs for Honeywell's LE-series seem to indicate that the various screen sizes weight about 2x - 3x more compared to similar sizes from other manufacturers - another indication of repurposed signage."

Digital signage, as you expect, are essentially the displays you might see at shopping malls and restaurants.

It's worth noting, as HDGuru does, that Westinghouse previously offered a 32-inch and 42-inch display at $499.99 and $799.99 respectively on HSN, but sold out quickly.
