Here we go again.

The Senate on Thursday night approved another bill that will delay the DTV transition from February 17 to June 12.

As you might recall, the Senate already approved a DTV delay bill on Monday, but it was defeated in the House on Wednesday.

Sources say the bill approved tonight by the Senate is same version the House tried to pass on Wednesday. The House made a few tweaks to the bill after receiving it from the Senate earlier this week, but on the major points the bill remains the same.

The House is in recess until Monday, and nothing is scheduled yet on this particular DTV bill.

TV broadcast stations are federally mandated to switch from analog to digital signals by February 17 in order to free up spectrum for public safety and other uses. But recent concerns about funding, the government-sponsored converter box coupon program, and possible reception problems on February 18 prompted Democrats and President Obama to call for a delay to the switch.

In addition to moving the transition date to June 12, the bill also lets broadcast stations make the switch earlier than that date if they are ready. If the stations do make that early switch, that spectrum can immediately be allocated to public safety and other uses.

Meanwhile, consumers with expired converter box coupons may apply for new replacement coupons. At the moment, people with expired coupons are out of luck.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, a Texas Republican and ranking member of the Senate Commerce Committee, pledged her support for the bill during a Thursday floor statement, but stressed that she will not accept another delay after this one.

"By now, people, have had the notice and we've done everything to mitigate the cost of this transition," she said. "I've talked with Senator Rockefeller [sponsor of the original Senate bill] about that and I think we are in agreement that now is the time for people to get their coupons and boxes because on June 12 this transition will be made."

Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat and Senate Commerce chairman, said yesterday that he was disappointed that the House failed to pass the DTV bill. "While the Senate paved the way with a bipartisan bill to repair this unfortunate situation, our Republican counterparts in the House chose to stand in the way of a workable solution," he said in a statement.

People have had years to get ready for this date. If they are not ready now, they won't be in July. I urge the House to defeat this bill again. Enough is enough.

congress has enough to do without worrying about people that didn't make the effort to receive a converter box. you've had a year and a year is enough. time to move on and focus on what's important. defeat the bill!!!!!!!!
