Though the last Gearlog entry to feature Polaroid concerned its bankruptcy filing, rumors of Polaroid's death are premature. That's especially true after today's announcement that instant print cameras are now digital! Kudos to our Mariella Moon who sniffed this one out in August.
The Polaroid PoGo is 4.7-inches wide by 3-inches tall and weighs only 10 ounces. It is indistinguishable from a bevy of other digital cameras except it prints! Sixty seconds after snapping the shutter your photo comes out fully developed. The photos are a bit on the tiny side and I suspect thinner than typical photo prints. At least that's the implication from, "2x3-inch sticky-backed photos."
Printing is accomplished with ZINK™ Zero-Ink™ Printing Technology. It's the same concept as last summer's Polaroid PoGo™ Instant Mobile Printer. Ten packs of photo paper are $4.99, so around 50 cents a shot. The camera itself will sell for $200.
"ZINK is an ink-free printing technology which replaces ink cartridges or ribbons with ZINK Paper™ - a composite material that has embedded, heat-activated dye crystals. Before printing, ZINK Paper appears white like regular photo paper. Once the pictures are printed, they are immediately dry to the touch, durable and smudge and water resistant."
I know what you're asking... in fact Polaroid also knows what you're asking. Will you have to shake it like a Polaroid picture?
"Unlike traditional instant film, photos from the Polaroid PoGo™ Instant Digital Camera emerge fully developed," says the company's Jon Pollock. "While many of our most passionate customers tell us "shaking" a Polaroid photo is part of the fun, with any Polaroid photo, the "shake" is totally optional."
Along with instant printing your images are also available digitally--though I couldn't find the sensor's pixel count in Polaroid's release! That makes me uneasy. On the other hand, I'm sure André 3000 of OutKast won't be disappointed.
