If you wear a suit to work, there's a pretty good chance your laptop wears a Tumi. As the Rolls Royce of TSA-friendly laptop bags, the $345 Tumi T-Pass Medium Capacity Laptop Brief gets the job done in style.

Laptops have been exposing themselves at TSA checkpoints for years, but recent offerings from bag makers help you keep your laptop out of sight and other valuables secure--even on the airport x-ray belt. Dense bags make it difficult for screeners to examine your electronics, forcing passengers to place their gear in open buckets at crowded checkpoints. The T-Pass bag features a full-length zipper between a pair of storage compartments, essentially splitting the bag for easy screening. When zipped, the center partition doubles as a third pocket, large enough for papers or even a thin notebook computer, if you happen to carry more than one laptop, like I often do.

The T-Pass offers plenty of storage even when you leave the center compartment empty for easy screening. The sufficiently padded rear compartment is roomy enough for a 15-inch notebook, with Velcro pads that can be removed to accommodate slightly larger laptops. On the front side of the center zipper, a second large compartment includes a pair of thin partitions for keeping your paperwork at a safe distance from your gym shorts. A removable pouch provides storage for toiletries or an AC adapter.

The front of the bag offers four different-size zipper compartments, with pockets for cell phones and MP3 players, business cards, cables, or whatever else you please. There's also an interior zipper pocket for securing valuables, as well as a security plate that identifies your bag by serial number, providing a phone number for Good Samaritans to call if they find your lost bag.

Known for their durability, Tumi bags are often heavy, with large zippers, thick padding, and other high quality materials that help justify the high price. Weighing in at a little over 4 pounds, the T-Pass is no exception. At 12-by-16-by-5.5 inches (HWD), the "medium" size bag is rather large. There's plenty of storage for all of your papers, electronics and other goodies, but the bag is simply too big for short daily commutes to the office; I think it will appeal largely to frequent travelers. The durable, high-quality handles and shoulder strap help provide comfort and support. A roller bag pass through helps seal the deal, saving your back as you travel from city to city.

With its center zipper essential to the lay flat TSA-friendly design, I think Tumi missed an excellent opportunity for a two-in-one bag. Extending the center zipper to the bottom of the bag would enable you to leave part of the bulk at home for days where you can commute with a lighter load, as Timbuk2 did with its Suitcase.

That said, the Tumi T-Pass Medium Capacity Laptop Brief is an excellent bag, and will certainly come in handy for frequent travelers that can afford it. If you're in a bit of a cash crunch, the Security Friendly Laptop Case from Case Logic may also be a good choice.
