BlackBerry_Maps_GPS_BGR.jpg

File this one in the "hell freezes over, film at 11" section: Boy Genius Report reports that Verizon Wireless may have finally unlocked the GPS chipset in the latest BlackBerry handsets, including the Pearl 8130 and the Curve 8330, to work with other programs besides VZ Navigator.

The report said that with the latest BlackBerry OS 4.5 revision (4.5.0.97), the handsets' included BlackBerry Maps application can now report the user's exact current location. Previously, there was no way to select "Internal GPS" in the program's options. Unfortunately, Google Maps for Mobile still isn't working. Still, could this be a sign of (long overdue) progress? (This has never been a problem on Sprint handsets, by the way--only with identical phones on Verizon.)
