Because midtown New York needs more flashing lights, JVC today unveiled Times Square's "first true 720p high definition display." The electronics company's new display features three LED screens, including a main screen and two ticker screens, one of which revolves around a large globe.
The entire display uses 1,266,400 LEDs spread over 1,007 LED modules. The primary display measures 7,880 square feet, weighs 12,500 pounds, and uses 1,266,400 LEDs with a 1280 by 720 resolution.
The billboard uses 3,014 feet of data cable, 2,650 feet of power cable, and 1,250 feet of steel tubing. JVC has maintained a display in Times Square since 1979.

I think Brian (the author, not the commenter) is spoiled by living in NYC! Come on down to sleepy DC sometime Brian - the only lights we get are the ones on the monuments 24/7. ;)
That being said, I think it's just a matter of time before just about any display or billboard is replaced by HD panels; they're so cheap these days that there must be marketing departments clamoring to present their products in beautiful HD glory. Now if only they'd get their damned standard def commercials off my HD TV channels, I'll be happy.
