Need something for the developer in your life? Google on Monday announced the availability of a SIM-unlocked G1 Android phone for $399.

The Android Dev Phone 1 is intended for advanced developers only. "Since the devices can be configured with system software not provided by or supported by Google or any other company, end users operate these devices at their own risk," Google said on the Android Web site.

To purchase, developers must first register with the Android Market site. There is currently a limit of one device per account, but the offer is open to developers in 18 countries, including the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Free shipping is available in the U.S.

The device is compatible with Android 1.0. Developers can use any SIM and can flash custom Android builds that will work with the unlocked bootloader, Google said.

"Unlike the bootloader on retail devices, the bootloader on the Android Dev Phone 1 does not enforce signed system images," Google said. "The Android Dev Phone 1 should also appeal to developers who live outside of T-Mobile geographies."

Google unveiled the T-Mobile G1, built by HTC, in late September. It is the first mobile phone built around Google's open-source, Linux-based Android platform.

Google on Monday also released the Android 1.0 SDK, release 2.

The release "creates applications that are compatible with Android 1.0 devices, such as the T-Mobile G1," Dan Morrill, an Android developer advocate, wrote in a blog post.

It also fixes several "obscure" bugs, he said. One of those bugs, however, had previously allowed developers to write technically-illegal code by using the Java Reflection APIs to access private or protected fields and methods, Morrill said.
