The Google Android family got a whole lot bigger today: The Open Handset Alliance announced the addition of 14 companies, including a number of high-profile names from across the consumer electronics board.
The list of new members includes AKM Semiconductor, ARM, ASUSTek Computer, Atheros Communications, Borqs, Ericsson, Garmin International, Huawei Technologies, Omron Software, Softbank Mobile, Sony Ericsson, Teleca AB, Toshiba, and Vodafone.
According to a release issued today on behalf of the Alliance: "New members will either deploy compatible Android devices, contribute significant code to the Android Open Source Project, or support the ecosystem through products and services that will accelerate the availability of Android-based devices."
Especially interesting to consumers, perhaps, is the inclusion of Sony Ericsson, which will no doubt be following in the footsteps of HTC and a number of handset manufacturers by designing its own Android phone.
The full list of members can be found on the official Open Handset Alliance site.

Interesting... I would like to see what Sony cooks up because they've been trying to produce a hit phone for a while now. Android would definately boost that for them
