circuit%20city%20logo.JPGCircuit City begins its liquidation sales on Wednesday, and even the company itself doesn't know what items will be discounted.

On Monday, the electronics retailer said that it will close 155 stores, a consequence of poor sales and the declining economy at large.

But when asked Tuesday what items would be discounted Wednesday and by how much, a Circuit City spokesman said that the sales were being handled by an unnamed liquidator, who would be responsible for everything from advertising to deciding what products would receive price cuts. The bottom line? Even Circuit City doesn't know what sales will take place tomorrow, lending the whole affair a bit of the atmosphere of a treasure hunt.

Don't expect much help from the Circuit City Web site, either. Since the store is still in business, Circuit City is currently advertising discounts on products in its remaining stores, including 76 in California alone.

I asked for the name and a contact at the liquidator. The Circuit City spokesman refused. Gordon Bros. handled some of the CompUSA liquidation proceedings; however, a company spokeswoman hasn't yet returned my call. If history repeats itself, though, some of the sale prices might actually be higher than normal, to eke out a bit more profit from bargain vultures. The real discounts may lie a few days down the road.

So what kind of deals can you expect tomorrow? The whole thing boils down to the one response I consistently received from the Circuit City representative: "It's up to the liquidator."

PC Magazine editor-in-chief lance Ulanoff adds an interesting point: since Circuit City has a more consumer-centric focus that CompUSA did, consumers may see some really aggressively-priced LCDs, supposedly one of the hot items this holiday season. On the downside, analysts estimate that LCD panel makers are selling close to cost, meaning that bargains might be found virtually anywhere.

Who knows? Feel free to tell us if you scored any bargains in the comments below.

The Compusa liquidation was not wonderful and is probably an example of what CC will be like.
As days followed days, discounts would be deeper but stock would be lesser... maybe some guy an hour after you left would buy the harddrive you planned on scoping out the next day.

At Compusa, I went every day for a week and in the end it wasn't worth the gas and time spent.

If I did this again I would seriously try to bribe someone working there to alert me to the next day's price drops.

PS, I have been to a couple CCs lately and the stock was rather meager.

I scored a Monster Power Station for 50% at CompUsa but it was in the final days of the liquidation. Not much to write home about before then. I'm hoping Circuit will have some real deals tomorrow.

I just went to the Circuit City sale in Buckhead Atlanta looking at TV's. On at least several models, they had bumped prices up about 10% and then advertised them as reduced 10% by for a net change of zero. Same prices as CC's website...What a waste of time.

Went to the Circuit City that's closing in Colorado Springs this AM. Store opened at 10:00. There was no line trying to get in the store. Was looking for a Wireless N Gigabit router, particularly a Dlink DIR 855 or 825 router. They had several 825's, but no 855's. Signs said 10% off but there were no prices posted. Asked a sales clerks what the price was and no one knew, nor did they now how to find out the price. The same was true with just about all other computer stuff, including hard drives, mice, keyboards, graphics cards, etc. The stock on most stuff was low or nonexistent. Stock may have been moved to the other two Colorado Springs stores. One couple leaving the Circuit City empty handed said they were going to Best Buy, which is across the street!

My experience with the CompUSA sale was what's reported above - inflated prices even after a discount!

Check the Web (NewEgg, etc.) to compare before going shopping.

The Burleson TX store has been open only a few months and is scheduled to close -go figure???

I was there before the doors opened @ 10am. There was about 20 of us waiting. I entered going straight towards the wall of TV's only to see 10 percent off uninspiring prices. To be honest I was looking for Panny 800 series sets, but did not find any though they were loaded with the Panny 80 series and other brands.

I walked every inch of the store to find a deal I could not pass.

I found boring CD & DVD's @ 20 percent off; video games 10 percent off too.

NOTE THIS: Game sets were a pilthy 5 percent - HA!!! That doesn't even pay the 8 percent sales !!

There were some misc items that are 30 percent off - i.e. CD holders etc...

Basically, it may be a bunch of CRAP you may not need, but when you find yourself pulling out your wallet to fulfill that deep seeded need to walk out with something tangible.

Or, just a little more crap you will never use!

I went to the CC in Palo Alto at about 11 AM on Wednesday. (First day of sale) There were four people walking out with nothing and one person with a bag. Bad sign. I went in and walked the store. 90% of the stuff was 10% off. No bargains to be had. As I was leaving the guy in front of me said to the receipt checker, who was seriously NOT busy, "See you at Costco." No bargains to be found, save your gas. Maybe as time goes on and they reduce prices....maybe.

Wastes time going.

I bought one thing from CC and I never bought anything again. That had to be one of the most
crooked stores I have even been in. I know why they are going out of business , they never do what they say on prices. Say one thing ,print one thing and charge another.
This is one store that I will not miss.
The store near where I live has almost no stock to speak of. It has been all but empty for a few months. One of the people who work there told me that they new something was up as they where not taking anything back in less they had to. And that very little was coming into the store as in stock.
They where told to send buyers to the Catalog online to order, as they would get a better price.

No one will get a deal, they will use the Christmas season to do what they have always done. Jack up the price and then lower it back down to the normal price and say , hay look all , it is all on sale and at a very good price.
I went to Best buy and found nearly the same computers ,laptops for less that CC had as on sale.
Do not waist your time even going till the last day. And then you will not get much.

I visited my local CC in Duluth, GA on Wednesday, the first day of the sale. I noticed there were quite a few price tags missing from many of the products in the store. On some of the remaining tags I could see hand written prices written in very small (size) numbers. I can only assume those were the prices after the discount.

In the computer section alone I could not find one price tag on any of the computers, laptops or desktops, and none on any of the printers. I was also suprised to find many printers out of the box without cords, manuals, or installation CD's sitting on back shelves away from the other normal printer displays. I can only guess they are trying to sell off their returns and or open box items.

Not worth going yet. I will try back next Wednesday in one week.

Yea, it was pretty sorry. I visited the one in Newnan, GA and I was very disappointed. 10% off? Come on! That's pathetic! If they want to get rid of all of this merchandise by December, they need to do something better. I tried to haggle with them but they would not hear me out. I old them fine--Best Buy was right across the street and walked out.

Well, I returned to said store on November 14, and I noticed that the big screen TVs have been marked down to 20%. Some other random things and stuffs have been marked down to 30%, but it's still far from a decent deal...

After reading Friday January 16 2009 that CC would definitely liquidate all products, and close its doors, I went out to check one of their newer stores, in Austin. There was hardly anyone to help out as typical with the stores, staff always seemed to be attending their own business, and not approaching the customers.
This time it was actually hard to get one to give information on the products there.
No sales, they offered a 10% discount, that basically covers the tax.
All Apple products including Ipods were removed from the store prior to the liquidation process.

TV's are still cheaper on the web, sites like compusa, tigerdirect and amazon.
So anyone trying to score some sale items, definitely check out prices elsewhere.

The Store attendant was a bit rude when I asked if the floor samples had a discount, and said' no nothing is on discount' when it used to be this way....

It is unfortunate that CC closes because it leaves other bigger greedier and more expensive stores with a larger market share.

This sale was pretty good to me, I went to the store on Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn and Got GH3 with the guitar for 20 bucks.
