The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE race is beginning to heat up, Autopia reports, as numerous competing startups rush to develop clean, production-capable vehicles that exceed 100 MPG or the energy equivalent (MPGe) in an effort to claim the $10 million award, which goes to the first company or group to do so.
"We congratulate this first group of competitors on their continued commitment to developing more super fuel efficient car choices," said Julie Zona, Director of Team Development and Relations for the Progressive Automotive X PRIZE, in the article. "The technologies reflected in this first wave of registered teams are as diverse as the teams themselves, and we look forward to hearing more about their individual ideas in advance of the stage race competition."
There are two classes to compete in: Mainstream (four passengers, four wheels, 200 mile range) and Alternative (two passengers, any number of wheels, and 100 mile range). Entrants have until early 2009 to submit their applications. Among the names already in the race as part of the first round are Aptera, Tata Motors, and numerous university and high school teams.
