auo_noframe.JPGTaiwanese company AUO presented what it calls the "no frame" LCD panel in a 2.2-inch form factor. The image on the left demonstrates two samples of the new panel placed side by side to show that the frames are barely visible. To accomplish that, AUO covered the surface of the panel with a transparent plastic lens which has the ability to refract light emitted adjacent the frame.

The prototype presented used a QVGA 2.2-inch screen with a 300cd/m2 luminance. This nascent technology could give a whole new meaning to full-faced touch screen displays in the future - think phones and other gadgets with a façade showing screens without frames. It could also lead to seamless displays when multiple panels are connected. The company's being secretive about the display's other specs though, and it seems mass production isn't imminent for now.
