Volvo will make HD Radio free across its line in 2009 (except one model). This is the first time an automaker got it right. HD Radio bills itself as free radio, but that's after paying as much as $350 (now) or $500 (when it first came out) to have the option added by the manufacturer. For Volvo, it will be standard on all models except the S60.

"Adding HD Radio capability to our models truly makes our audio systems state of the art, giving Volvo drivers an even more enjoyable driving experience," said Doug Speck, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America. "Undoubtedly, other manufacturers will follow." One can hope.

Other automakers offer HD Radio as an option. BMW was first, charging $500 in the BMW and Mini; it's now down to $350. Jaguar and Hyundai also offer HD Radio. Ford offers HD Radio on most models (not the Lincoln MKS unfortunately) and also has a nice retrofit kit that integrates with the dashboard controls.
