Today is XOHM day; they're having a big launch party for the new WiMAX service in Baltimore, and I'll be there taking pictures. Look for my coverage on PCMag.com later today.
Meanwhile, though, I decided to answer a question someone asked last week about using XOHM in a moving, metal vehicle. I took my XOHM card onto Baltimore's Light Rail and onto the #27 bus.
Result: In a stopped, metal vehicle, there's essentially no difference in speed. I got blazing speeds of up to 8 megabits down. Yowza.
But once the vehicle got moving, I started getting inconsistent results. The Sprint-approved speed test site, at www.speedtest.net, showed speeds of 5 to 6 megabits down. But my FTP server, which chugged along at 2 megabits while I wasn't moving, dropped to about 700 kilobits.
Of course, you're most likely to use XOHM while sitting still or moving slowly. Hopefully. Please don't surf and drive, people.
I was struck once again by the inconsistency in XOHM's coverage. I hit a dead spot between the North Avenue and Woodberry light rail stops, and also along part of Remington Ave. in Wyman Park. Hopefully Sprint will patch things up swiftly.

I am happy to hear it's workin down there. I am sure xohm will be working on the spotty coverge since there so much funding going into this project. Unlike philadlephia wifi project of last year where contractors just strung up wifi AP's all over and didn't have a plan on how to hand off IP's to each wifi AP.

Since I work with XOHM I can assure you that the coverage is expanding beyond its reach on launch day. The coverage maps on XOHM.com are updated frequently, so check back there to watch it progress.
