sonimsmall1.jpg Updated. Looks like Sonim got some new retail partners for folks not covered by rural carriers; check out this post for details.

Original post. Their European phones have been dropped from a 13-story building and shot with guns, four times, but Sonim's ultra-rugged GSM cell phones keep on ringing. Now, the California-based company finally plans to bring their phones home to the US with the upcoming XP3, which will be available next March from several rural US carriers.

Designed for blue-collar workers and wilderness aficionados, the Sonim XP3 is as close to indestructible as a phone gets. It's waterproof. Officially, it runs at temperatures from -4 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit and it withstands a 6-foot drop onto concrete without shrugging. Sonim's CEO, Bob Plaschke, said it can actually run at temperatures down to -40 degrees and survive a 9-foot drop (not to mention that one, 13-story fall.) It's impervious to almost anything, including "micro-particles." It has 2.5 days of talk time and an astounding 2 months of standby on its huge 2200 mAh battery.

The US version will be a quad-band EDGE, GSM phone with GPS, Bluetooth, and a flashlight mode. It has a glare-resistant 128x160, 65k-color screen. It isn't a smart phone, but it runs Opera Mini for Web browsing out in the wilderness. It will have a 3-megapixel camera with geotagging for still photos, but no video capability. It doesn't play music, but the speakerphone goes really loud without distortion. It's protected by a 3-year, no-questions-asked guarantee. You break it, you get a new one.

There will be a European version of the XP3 with fewer features, as well.

Much more after the jump.

"There's two percent of the market that will really want these phones, and they'll find us," Plaschke said.

There are other rugged phones on the US market, but none are this tough. The toughest I've encountered are the Nextel i365 and i580, but they aren't waterproof, just water-resistant. The Verizon G'zOne line is waterproof, but not quite as rugged. The Kyocera KX12, for Alltel, and the new Samsung Rugby, for AT&T, are also rugged, but not as hardened as the Sonim beasts. Of course, many of those phones also have consumer-friendly media features that the XP3 lacks.

Sonim may be a US firm, but so far they've stayed out of the US market, except for the occasional gray-market import of their existing XP1 phone. The reason is familiar: the US market is "a monopoly ... okay, an oligopoly," Plaschke said, where if you're a GSM phone maker, two people (the buyers for AT&T and T-Mobile) control almost all the GSM phone sales in the country.

In other countries, people can buy GSM phones independent of service, leading to a richer and more diverse retail culture, Plaschke said.

That's changed, though, as Sonim has made a deal with ten carriers in a consortium of rural GSM carriers, covering about 10 million people. These guys, it turns out, are a perfect fit for the XP3, as they cover a lot of rugged terrain.

"This is the first-ever exclusive for the rural GSM association," Plaschke said. He said they expect to sell about 50,000 phones in the US in their first year here. That's not a lot in terms of the larger cell phone market, but Sonim's a small company; it's enough for them.

And Sonim's concerns aren't what you'd call consumer mainstream. They're rough-and-tumble. The XP3 has an accelerometer, just like the iPhone's, for instance. But it won't be used for games; it'll be used to detect if the user (say, a lineman somewhere outside of Wichita) has suffered a fall and can't get up.

Similarly, the GPS isn't just for driving directions; it'll also potentially be used as part of a "safety beacon" service that can help folks lost in the wilderness.

With Sonim's older XP1 becoming the XP3, I had to ask, where's the XP2? That number is being saved for an upcoming consumer model, Plaschke said.

"Our two biggest sets of requests have been from soldiers, and from parents of teenagers," Plaschke said. The XP3 definitely strikes me as the kind of phone you'd take to Iraq, but it doesn't have much for the more average phone-destroying consumer. We'll hear more about a model for regular folks in 2009, Plaschke said. A combination satellite/terrestrial model is also in the works, he said

That's fricking awesome!!! I want this phone right now. I am so careless with my stuff I break my phone like every 3 months. I read that the warranty covers 3 years, so basically if you compare the cost with how many other phones I would have to buy in 3 years, it's totally worth it (without the hassle and stress of changing phones). How soon can I get one?

Laura, it's coming next March. And yes: it's a 3-year, no questions asked, full replacement warranty.

Will it be available "unlocked" for consumers outside of the rural carriers' coverage area? Reason I'm asking is, we don't have the rural carriers where I live (Maine). I have been checking Sonim's website regularly for months now hoping they'd come out with a phone for the U.S. market.

I hope this phone comes down under soon. I'm on my 3rd XP1 as it is and although the features are limited on the XP1, the extras on the XP3 may well suit me in my line of work.
Please keep us updated as soon as you're in the know and I will definitely upgrade regardless of where it is released.

Will current owners of the XP1 be able to trade in for an XP3 and just pay the difference?

I love my XP1 here in South Africa (I imported from UK) I hope that the XP3 comes here!It has finally overtaken the Gzone phone with its waterproof capabilities now. Is that battery life for real? 2 months?

This is Bob Plaschke from Sonim. Thanks for all the nice comments. To answer Jeff's question, we will be offering a phone in the states spring of 2009. About the battery life, there is 320 hours of standby time. While not two months, that is enough for 2 weeks which I think is still pretty impressive. Again, thanks for all the interest and please keep checking our website: www.sonimxp3.com for updates.

Best,
Bob

I bought a Sonim xp1 and had it for 24 hours and then found the casing on the top right hand side was splitting open- so much for a tough phone - can only hope your xp3 is of a better standard and that your QC department has done its job this time - The XP1 to me is a failure and all the hype about it being a tough phone - now where did yiu suck that out of ? Pissed off ? yes I am - and very much so too - I waited for a month to get the thing now it has to go back and I have to wait to see IF yes IF a replacement can be found- I really think a simple nokia beats the shit out of this phone for reliability

Have I got this correct?....The XP3 we are to get in the UK is a down spec version of the US version? no GPS?....no camera?.....smaller battery?...anything else I am missing? anyone know what the reasoning behind this is? I currently have the XP1 and have to have another phone with another contract just to have a a few extra features that seem to be available on the new US XP3....but not on the Uk version... why?

Please, please, please make a plan to bring the XP 3 to South African shores!

As an ecologist I'm completely fed up with phones that are poorly build and break after only nine months!

Will be keeping an eye out.

Well, I waited for the XP3 to arrive down under and really wanted to upgrade. Unfortunately the XP3 doesn't have the capacity for an external aerial which I need to get coverage in the area that I work in.

Change the carrier you say!!!

NO WAY, Crazy Johns in Darwin has come to the party with great service and perseverance with my "Oh, I've broken another one guys!!"

Having said this, Sonim and Crazy Johns came to the rescue with an antenna for the XP1 which has boosted the signal strength and kept my sanity in check.

It kind of sucks that the Americans get all the goodies (camera, GPS, etc..), considering Australians have higher ownership per capita of mobile/cell phones in the world.

Spread the love I say.

I bought my xp3 on ebay, two weeks ago (europe). No doubt, this phone is tough. I'm working as engineer in rough environment (incinerations) and till last week I used a nokia 6250 which never broke and still is in operation as second phone. The XP3 is slightly smaller than the nokia. There's no camera and no gps though in our european version - probably interesting options but at the moment I'm fine without them. The signal strengh is very strong compared to all other phones we use here. And since I'm presently working in Italy there's a lot of different phones around to compare - Italians can't live with less than 2 mobile phones each ;-)
No doubt: If you're looking for a stylish, slimline mobile phone to impress the chicks at the espresso bar with hundreds of (never used) functions, there are better phones on the market. If you look for a mobile phone for communication at all circumstances that probably never dies - there's no other choice than the xp3 (or the good old nokia6250 ;-). Greetings from Rome, Italy, Simon

I dont think it fair that America is the only country to get the xp3 with camera and gps Australians would love this phone as we have ideal conditions for its use for business and leisure & why have different phones or features for different parts of the world?

March 27, 2009 12:14 PM

You couldn't be more right valerie, however, due to US regulations, codes, guidelines, FCC, OSHA, and all the other government crap as well as having to use only certain carriers, we don't get alot of the neat, useful or not, gadgets that sooooo many other countries get, and Ive waited for a phone like this one for a long time in Texas.

I have had the Sonim XP3 Quest for a week now.
It lives up to all my expectations ++. Camera, GPS, JAVA (making my Safe work like a charm), not as big as I feared. It's not a smart phone, but I never wanted one, as they always run out of battery, and leave me missing out on business calls. I'm happy as a pig in pigsh**t, and have found my phone.

If I buy the Sonim XP3 Quest will I be able to use it through AT&T? Hope to get a reply before I put another phone to rest.
