A veggie oil-powered Lotus Seven replica from Oregon won the 600-mile
Escape from Berkeley alt fuel race from Berkeley, California to Las Vegas, Nevada, in a competition that saw three of the five teams drop out, Autopia reports. Jack McCornack and Sharon Westcott crossed the finish line first to collect $5,000 in prize money—without using a single gallon of gas.
"The only rules were you can't use petroleum and you have to scavenge your fuel along the way," the article said, noting that even the race organizers were amazed anyone finished at all.
"The basic premise is build a vehicle out of junk, we'll give you the equivalent of one gallon of gas and you have to drive 600 miles to Las Vegas. Oh, and you can't buy any fuel along the way," said Jim Mason, the artist and inventor behind the race, in the article. "That's a pretty heavy stone to carry." The Lotus beat out a wood-burning pickup, along with the three that dropped out: a veggie-oil burning Mercedes Benz, an electric tandem bicycle, and a steam-powered tricycle.
